EVILE: Enter the Grave

Evile are a Thrash Metal outfit from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire in the UK.
Founded by old school friends Matt Drake and Ben Carter, and after playing with different guitarists and bass players for a year or so, Matt's brother Ol was asked to join as lead guitarist. After a short search for a bass player The 3 were contacted by Mike Alexander via an ad in a local guitar shop, and the band was formed. With every member contributing to every aspect of the band they have a uniqueness and strength which gives them a cutting edge, influenced by bands such as Sepultura, Exodus, Metallica, Annihilator and Slayer to name but a few, Evile have created something that the metal world is crying out for. Despite being un-signed at the time, Evile were hand-picked to headline the second stage of Bloodstock Open Air 06, and also to open the main stage of Manchester's own Damnation Festival.

T.N.T.:[1992] Realized Fantasies [Atlantic]

1989's Intuition consolidated the stylistic gains of its predecessor, but the band soon found itself without a label, Polygram having lost interest in promoting them. Odiin left to remain home with his family, prompting the hire of American drummer Johnny Macaluso for 1992's Realized Fantasies, which was recorded for Atlantic. However, friction between the American and Norwegian portions of the group -- the former wanting more international success, the latter satisfied with popularity at home -- led to TNT's disintegration. Macaluso joined Riot, while Le Tekro and Black formed the more prog rock-oriented Vagabond, and Harnell performed with a mostly cover-tune project called Morning Wood. TNT reunited in 1996, featuring a lineup of Harnell, Le Tekro, Black, drummer Frode Hansen, and keyboardist Dag Stokke. They released the album Firefly in 1997, after which Harnell took a year's sabbatical; he returned in 1998, and TNT issued the new album Transistor the following year.

T.N.T.:[1988] Intuition [Mercury]

TNT is, in essence, a pop-metal group. That said, the band mops up the floor with most of their clueless contemporaries; with hyper-refined Euro-metal precision, TNT punctuates their tunes with loads of instrumental details, arrangement twists and turns, and a well-developed sense of melody. On Intuition, TNT delivers tightly wound pop-metal and grandiose power balladry, all of which is filtered through a decidedly European sense of sweeping romance and bombast. It all undoubtedly sounds dated and a bit soulless, but this is a strong effort from the band, nonetheless. Check out "Caught Between the Tigers" for a characteristically killer guitar riff from guitarist Ronnie Le Tekro.

THE SWORD:[2006] Age of Winters [Kemado]

Not to be confused with the Canadian heavy metal band from the late '80s, named simply Sword, the Sword is a retro-metal four-piece hailing from -- of all places -- the singer/songwriter oasis of Austin, TX. First conceived in 2003, the Sword really hit their stride about a year later, when founding vocalist and guitarist J.D. Cronise joined forces with guitarist Kyle Shutt, bassist Bryan Richie, and drummer Trivett Wingo, and made a much raved-over appearance at Austin's famed SXSW festival. National touring stints with everyone from Clutch to indie rock darlings ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead followed, and by mid-2005 the Sword had been picked up by New York-based indie label Kemado Records, with their much-anticipated debut album, Age of Winters, appearing early the next year. Before completing their second album, they contributed two songs (one original and one Led Zeppelin cover) to a split 12" EP with Swedish heavy rockers Witchcraft in November 2007. Gods of the Earth arrived in spring 2008.

T.N.T.:[2004] My Religion [Mayhem]

With a level of musicianship higher than the average hair metal band, Norway's TNT offered a prog-tinged take on pop-metal due largely to the stunning vocal range of lead singer Tony Harnell and the guitar technique of Ronni Le Tekro. Originally consisting of vocalist Dag Ingebrigtsen (aka D.D. Dynamite), bassist Steiner Eikum, and drummer Morten "Diesel" Dahl, TNT formed in the Norwegian town of Trondheim in 1982, releasing an eponymous, Norway-only debut later that year with all lyrics in Norwegian. When it failed to sell, Eikum left the band and was replaced by Morty Black; soon afterwards, Ingebrigtsen was replaced by New York native Tony Harnell. Harnell debuted on the band's first international album, 1984's Knights of the New Thunder (on which he was credited as the more Norwegian-sounding Tony Hansen). The band really began to hit its stride on 1987's Tell No Tales, although after that album's release, Dahl departed and was replaced by Kenneth Odiin.

SWARM: [2003] Beyond the End [Mausoleum]

The eponymous 1999 EP by heavy metal group the Swarm reunited three former members of Bay Area thrash sensations Death Angel -- these being singer Mark Osegueda, guitarist Rob Cavestany, and drummer Andy Galeon -- alongside bassist Michael Isaiah. An album was duly recorded and a tour with Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell took place two years later. But then unexpected circumstances (specifically, a benefit concert for cancer-stricken friend Chuck Billy of Testament) would set into motion a Death Angel reunion made flesh three years later, which led to the Swarm being shelved indefinitely. Luckily, the band's Beyond the End LP was eventually given a European release by Mausoleum Records in 2003.

OMEN: [1989] The Best of Omen - Teeth of the Hydra

Throughout the '80s, glam metal, pop-metal and hair bands were huge on the L.A./Hollywood rock scene -- the Sunset Strip was inundated with bands that hoped to be the next Quiet Riot, Poison, or L.A. Guns. But when other L.A. bands were heavily into the glam scene, Omen was a power metal band first and foremost. When Kimball left Omen in 1987, Powell hired Coburn Pharr to be the band's new lead singer. Pharr appeared on 1988's Escape to Nowhere, and not long after that, Powell decided to discontinue Omen. But in 1996, Powell opted to revive Omen and assembled a new lineup that included Andy Haas on bass, Ricky Murray on drums, and Greg Powell on lead vocals and rhythm guitar. Kenny Powell wanted to rehire Kimball as Omen's lead vocalist, but when he was unable to get ahold of him, he recruited his son Greg Powell. After singing on Omen's 1997 comeback album Recovering the Gates, Greg Powell decided to leave his father's band -- he was interested in pursuing a more contemporary alternative metal direction -- and put together his own band Stomping Ground. Greg Powell was replaced by Kevin Goocher, a veteran of Dallas' rock scene -- and in 2003, Omen's lineup of Kenny Powell, Kevin Goocher, Ricky Murray, and Andy Haas recorded Eternal Black Dawn for the Phoenix, AZ-based Crash Music. 2003 marked Omen's 20th anniversary.

OMEN: [1988] Escape To Nowhere [Metal Blade]

Although not a huge name in the metal world, Omen has enjoyed a small cult following among headbangers since the early '80s. Omen is best-known for melodic yet aggressive power metal/fantasy metal along the lines of King Diamond, Queensrÿche, Savatage, Manowar, and Helloween; Omen is forceful and hard-driving, but they're always been musical and melodic. The band was formed in Los Angeles in 1983 by lead guitarist Kenny Powell, who had been a member of an L.A.-based band called Savage Grace. Powell's early influences included Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, UFO, Ronnie James Dio, Black Sabbath, and Rainbow (among others), and Omen's Metal Blade and Enigma recordings of the '80s reflected the guitarist's appreciation of those headbangers. Omen has had its share of lineup changes over the years; in addition to Powell, the band's early members included lead singer J.D. Kimball, bassist Jody Henry, and drummer Steve Wittig. In 1984, Omen signed with the L.A.-based Metal Blade and recorded their debut album, Battle Cry, which was followed by Warning of Danger in 1985, The Curse in 1986, Nightmares in 1987, and Escape to Nowhere in 1988.

OLD MAN'S CHILD: [1998] Ill-Natured Spiritual Invasion [Century Media]

Born in Oslo, Norway under the supervision of guitarist/singer Thomas "Grusom" Rune and fellow ax-man Jardar, the two wanted to create a project that was filled with the bleak lyrical content of modern day black metal and an influence of early death metal. The results were Old Man's Child, who made their debut in late 1993. After eventually inking a deal with the Norway based Hot Records in 1994, their first full-length Born of the Flickering came about later on that year. After a bit of a change in their rhythm section, the re-release of their first demo In The Shades of Life came out in 1996 on a Mini-CD format, digital re-mix and a different packaging was also included.

BATHORY: [1995] Octagon [Black Mark Production]

In a musical realm where scale of influence has little to do with commercial success, few originators of the extreme metal arts evoke as deep a sense of mystery, or incite such hushed, reverential tones of admiration, as Sweden's Bathory. Essentially a one-man operation helmed by the mysterious Quorthon, Bathory's development from the rawest form of embryonic black metal, to thrash, death, and back to its self-devised Viking-themed black metal, has mirrored and regularly defined the genre's very evolution. Indeed, along with Switzerland's Celtic Frost, Germany's Kreator, and Denmark's Mercyful Fate, they easily qualify as one the most important European extreme metal acts of the '80s and '90s. The Swedish-born multi-instrumentalist Quorthon (also known as Black Spade and/or Ace Shoot, although his real name, Thomas Forsberg, is still the subject of debate) formed Bathory in 1983 with sidemen Hanoi (bass) and Vans (drums).

OLD MAN'S CHILD: [2003] In Defiance Of Existence [Century Media]

Despite traveling even farther away from black metal's roots, Old Man's Child is still one of the consummate death metal acts, mainly because In Defiance of Existence remains as uncompromisingly vicious as it is confidently experimental. Ambient keyboard swells rule the landscape, changing tempos and volume as often as necessary, but not too often to usurp the catchiness of the fast riffing and drum fills, making this disc the best of all worlds without sacrificing anything out of supposed contradictions. In a genre that is either black or white, Old Man's Child has released a disc that resides in gray areas previously unexplored and even feared unattainable, making the transformation from pedigreed players living on reputation alone to a force to be reckoned with.

BATHORY: [1996] Blood On Ice [Black Mark Production]

Bathory's famed lost album, Blood on Ice, was originally recorded in the late '80s, smack-dab in the middle of the Swedish group's revolutionary transition from its barbaric black metal beginnings to the ambitiously orchestrated Viking metal of its golden era. At the time, the work was deemed far too big a departure by band mastermind Quorthon, who, among other things, shockingly substituted his raspy croak for actual singing throughout -- but, as with any abandoned project, retrospective evidence also suggests that Quorthon was also less than secure about whether his songwriting and musicianship were yet developed enough to fulfill his vision. Shrouded in mystery for the ensuing half-decade, Blood on Ice was finally resurrected and completed (replete with story-advancing sound effects) to Bathory's satisfaction in 1996, at which time it was released to widely deserved critical and fan acclaim, despite a few but distinct shortcomings that placed its overall achievement slightly below that of acknowledged triumphs like Blood Fire Death and Hammerheart. Sliding into gear rather slowly with tentative offerings like the title track, "One Eyed Old Man," and "The Sword" (which sounds way too similar to Manowar's "Blood of My Enemies"), the album eventually reaches cruising speed with outstanding moments like "The Stallion," "The Woodwoman," and the colossal "Gods of Thunder of Wind and of Rain," whereupon Quorthon's vocals (sometimes given to off-pitch variations) sound better than ever before. The gentle acoustic bridge "The Ravens" sets up the epic, nine-minute masterstroke of "The Revenge of the Blood on Ice," which may single-handedly convince even the most cynical of listeners that this long-forgotten work deservingly belongs within Bathory's hallowed canon. Also worth mentioning, the album's lengthy (meaning biblically sized) explanatory liner notes read like a veritable Rosetta Stone for longtime Bathory supporters, shedding unprecedented historical light and perspective upon the group's mysterious history.

AXEL RUDI PELL: [1989] Wild Obsession [SPV]
German guitarist Axel Rudi Pell is one of heavy metal's masterminds, thanks to his spiraling playing techniques and pinch-hitting riffs which crafted Pell as a mainstay in the hard rock genre for the majority of the hair metal '80s. His first band, Steeler, kicked off a mild career in Europe during the early part of the decade, issuing three albums (Steeler [1984], Rulin' the Earth [1985], Strike Back [1986]) prior to 1987's Undercover Animal, which signaled the beginning of Pell's long-sought solo career. This professional jaunt allowed Pell to fully expose his riveting playing power and collaborations between he and other musicians. His 1989 debut Wild Obsession showcased ex-Steeler's bassist Volker Krawczak and vocal charm from Charlie Huhn, but 1991's sophomore effort proved Pell's determination. Nasty Reputation was heavier, throttling with Rob Rock on vocals and a definitive stance for Pell to also breach upon neo-classical influences. Later albums such as Black Moon Pyramid (1996) and Oceans of Time (1998) were exquisitely mastered, churning similar sounds of Rainbow and Deep Purple. Axel Rudi Pell proved his single star status, almost celebratory, like guitar wizard Yngwie Malmsteen, throughout the '90s as well, issuing a slew of releases while remaining a chief force among the German charts.

VOIVOD: [1997] Phobos @320kbps

Voivod (singer Denis "Snake" Belanger, guitarist Denis "Piggy" d'Amour, drummer Michel "Away" Langevin, and bassist Jean-Yves "Blacky" Theriault) was one of the first thrash bands out of Canada to gain popularity outside of their home country. From their beginning in the early '80s, their main goal was to be different from anyone else, and thus they incorporated odd musical tempos and futuristic story lines into their songs, often dealing with technology taking over the world. Voivod opened the way for other Canadian thrash bands and for metal bands with their unique styles of performing and writing.

JOE SATRIANI: [2001] Live in San Francisco

Booked into San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium and slated to film three songs for the venue's Live! at the Fillmore TV show, Joe Satriani decided to take the opportunity to record and film his show for a double CD and DVD. The audio version, clocking in at close to two-and-a-half hours, serves to create a thorough introduction to an artist who, up to this point, had not released a real compilation. The album presents concert recordings of material first heard on Satriani's previous studio releases: one from Not of This Earth (1986), four from Surfing With the Alien (1987), one from Dreaming #11 (1988), four from Flying in a Blue Dream (1989), two from The Extremist (1992), two from Time Machine (1993), one from Joe Satriani (1995), six from Crystal Planet (1998), and three from Engines of Creation (2000). The guitarist varies the pace, combining up-tempo hard rock tracks with more melodic medium-tempo numbers and even some lovely ballads. His vibrato-heavy, sustain-drenched playing remains consistent and identifiable no matter what the context, but despite his reputation as a high-speed riff technician his work can be surprisingly lyrical at times. His band -- bass, drums, and a keyboard player who sometimes picks up a rhythm guitar -- provides letter-perfect support, and Satriani draws considerable energy from an enraptured audience, making this an ideal sampler of the guitarist's work. Anyone who thinks of hard rock guitar playing as only one part of a complete musical palette, or who looks for more of a dynamic range in an instrumentalist, is likely to suffer from flagging attention before the two discs are over. But lovers of rock guitar in the Jimi Hendrix tradition will love this one as much as the fans in attendance did.

**Rare Deep Purple performing for the TV cameras in Europe during the early seventies. Included here are the songs that propelled the band to greatness. Also featured are the earliest known recordings of the classic Mark II line up of Blackmore, Lord, Paice, Gillan and Glover. This is Deep Purple putting new material through it's paces that would ultimately surface on the legendary first album, 'Deep Purple in Rock', including the earliest versions of the all time classics 'Speed King' and 'Child in Time'. SAVATAGE: [1985] The Dungeons Are Calling

A much heavier effort than the preceding Sirens (although recorded at the same sessions), The Dungeons Are Calling was a less diverse, if more cohesive statement. The title track opens the album with haunting vocals and eerie guitar, soon erupting into one of the group's most intense anthems. "By the Grace of the Witch," the following song, is another fist-pumping number with an unshakable rhythm. It was on this album that the group first really started using synthesizers, and while none of the songs are driven by the instrument, they are used to nice effect on the title track and "City Beneath the Surface." It was in the lyrics, however, that the greatest difference was heard between The Dungeons Are Calling and Sirens. Here, almost all the songs are firmly entrenched in dark fantasy tales of hell, witches, and knights. "The Whip," the one exception, is an almost throwaway S&M number that does not show the band at their best. Although these topics might seem quite dated to many modern listeners, with the thundering guitar and rhythm section on such tracks as "Midas Knight" and "City Beneath the Surface," it's easy just to get lost in the blinding music.

PANTERA: [1992] Vulgar Display Of Power @320kbps

One of the most influential heavy metal albums of the 1990s, Vulgar Display of Power is just what is says: a raw, pulverizing, insanely intense depiction of naked rage and hostility that drains its listeners and pounds them into submission. Even the "ballads," "This Love" and "Hollow," have thunderingly loud, aggressive chorus sections. Preaching power through strength and integrity, Phil Anselmo discards any further attempts at singing in favor of a militaristic bark and an unhinged roar, while the crystal-clear production sets Diamond Darrell's pummeling riffs against a rhythmic backdrop so thunderously supportive that Darrell often solos without underlying rhythm guitar parts. The album again follows Cowboys from Hell's strategy of stacking the best songs at the beginning and letting their momentum carry the listener through the rest, but the riffs and sonic textures are more consistently interesting this time around. Pantera's thick-sounding, post-hardcore power metal and outraged, testosterone-drenched intensity would help pave the way for alternative metal acts like Korn and Tool; Vulgar Display of Power is the best distillation of those virtues.

OVERKILL: [1993] I Hear Black @320kbps

After releasing perhaps the finest, most musical recording of the band's already considerable thrash metal career in 1991, Overkill followed up Horrorscope in 1993 with I Hear Black, a slightly more dense, ambitious recording, and the band's first for Atlantic Records. There had been a few lineup changes over the first years of their recording career and the only original members to appear on I Hear Black are vocalist Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth and bassist D.D. Verni. Ellsworth and Verni are joined by relative newcomers Rov Cannavino and Merrit Gant on guitars and Tim Mallare on drums. Initially, I Hear Black was met with a somewhat cool response by the group's thrash fan base but, over time, metal fans of all varieties have come to appreciate the slower, more dynamic grind that at first confused fans expecting exclusively lightning-fast riffs from the group. The opening "Dreaming in Columbian," the title track, and "Weight of the World" are all mid-tempo metal highlights featuring some decent work by Ellsworth especially, as the singer continues his '90s trend by focusing slightly more on melody, going over the top only where necessary. While not an important release for its genre or even for the band, Overkill's I Hear Black is still a respectable post-thrash offering.

DANZIG: [1999] Danzig 6:66 - Satan's Child @320kbps

Danzig's last release of the 20th century, 6:66 Satan's Child, follows the same formula as his last album (1996's Blackacidevil) -- gone are the straightforward Jim Morrison-meets-Black Sabbath-sounding songs of the band's first few albums, replaced by metallic industrial sounds (comparable to Godflesh, White Zombie, etc.). Singer Glenn Danzig is the only remaining member of his original solo lineup and, as on his previous album, handles guitar duties (filling out the lineup are Lazie on bass and Joey C. on drums). Although Danzig's musical style may have shifted over the years, the outfit's trademark sex'n'Satan imagery remains the same, as evidenced by the album title, lyrics, comic book-style cover, and the CD booklet photos. While such tracks as "Belly of the Beast" and "Lilin" move at a dirge-like pace, they also pack quite a sonic punch, courtesy of the album's production team of Glenn and Peter Lorimer (Orgy members Amir Derakh and Jay Gordon mixed several tracks as well). Longtime Danzig fans will know what to expect from such titles as "Cult W/out a Name," "Firemass," "Satans Child," and "Apokalips."

CLUTCH: [1997] Impetus [EP]

Clutch combined elements of funk, Led Zeppelin, and metal with vocals inspired by Faith No More. Formed in 1991 in Germantown, MD, the group included Neil Fallon (vocals), Tim Sult (guitar), Dan Maines (bass), and Jean-Paul Gaster (drums). They built a local following through constant gigging, and after just one 7" single (the classic Earache release "Passive Restraints") Clutch was signed by EastWest Records. Their debut LP, Transnational Speedway League, followed in 1993. A self-titled album appeared two years later and afforded Clutch some mainstream exposure. They jumped to the larger Columbia label for 1998's Elephant Riders, and many thought the group might join their sonic cousins Korn and Deftones in the alternative metal winner's circle. That didn't quite happen. But it didn't matter, because a quality fan base continued to thrive for Clutch.

GODSMACK: [2003] Faceless

Godsmack's first, slow-burning success -- the self-titled debut from 1998 -- spent two years climbing charts and selling records as the witchy minstrels of alternative metal wound their way across the country on two consecutive Ozzfest tours. The sound was familiar enough, recalling Alice in Chains in both vocalist Sully Erna's tortured howls and their very name, taken from that band's excellent 1992 release, Dirt. And while it initially failed to impress critics, fans quickly picked up on the band's industrial touch to the post-grunge sound. Likewise, 2001's Awake was regarded by some as a sophomore slump, with only half of the sales of Godsmack's debut, but "slump" in this case equaled double-platinum. And though the sales did validate the band's effort to some extent, Awake was full of growing pains, as they tried in vain to shed their influences and ended up with a record that had successful moments, but its reliance on stop-start rhythms often left it sounding sorely underwritten. Faceless, Godsmack's third full-length, grooves more fluidly than Awake, but the band still hasn't managed to locate the pop hooks that made their debut a success. And while concentrating on texture can be just as interesting as hooks, lyrics as misanthropic as Erna's only sink Faceless further into the mire.

FUDGE TUNNEL: [1994] The Complicated Futility of Ignorance + In A Word [EP]

The final release from Fudge Tunnel, Complicated Futility of Ignorance comes off like a modern, slightly mechanized Motörhead, comparable to late Prong perhaps, but more dynamic and without any of the industrial gimmicks. This record drips with the blood of calloused hands shredded in an attempt to extricate every ounce of heaviness from the many angular and distorted guitar riffs. Not one to ever hold back, guitarist/vocalist Alex Newport leads his band (that also includes David Riley on bass and Adrian Parkin on drums) through one relentless and violent metal groove-fest after another. The quality is consistant throughout this recording, but the doom-inflected "Six Eight" and the ruthless opener "Random Acts of Cruelty" are subtle standouts. Fans of sludgy, extreme metal not yet familiar with the influential Fudge Tunnel would do well to acquaint themselves with Complicated Futility of Ignorance, perhaps the best of this group's many fine offerings.

BATTLELORE: [2002] Where The Shadows Lie

The debut full-length from Finnish fantasy/gothic metal outfit Battlelore, Where the Shadows Lie, displays more songwriting and arrangement skills than listeners might expect from a new act. One reason for the group's original delivery is their unconventional lineup. In all, there are seven members including three vocalists performing on this 2002 offering. Founder/guitarist Jyri Vahvanen is joined by guitarist and co-lead vocalist Tommi Havo, second (clean) vocalist Patrik Mennander, female vocalist Kaisa Jouhki, keyboard player Maria, drummer Henri Vahvanen, and bassist Miika Kokkola. Together, these musicians deliver highly melodic, finely crafted material. Maria's contributions are essential, which in noteworthy as keyboards rarely play more than a supporting role in similar metal combos. Coherent and stylized, this record should impress fans of Battlelore's rather specialized genre.

RAGE: From the Cradle to the Stage - 20th Anniversary [DCD][320k]

Of all of rock & roll's many comatose old tricks, few are hanging as tenuously to their life-support systems as that absolute relic known as the live album. Having said that, Rage's first such effort, From the Cradle to the Stage, benefits from a better premise (celebrating the enduring power thrashers' 20th anniversary), a better track listing, and a better overall recording quality than most half-hearted, contract-fulfilling entries into the format. Recorded in the German town of Bochum on January 25, 2004 over the course of a grueling, three-hour-plus performance, the two-disc extravaganza packs most of the necessary classics ("Suicide," "Don't Fear the Winter," the ancient Avenger track "Prayers of Steel," etc.) in with representative cuts from the band's later-day albums ("Refuge," "Solitary Man," etc.), and, to remind us of the band's '80s origins, the mandatory drum and guitar solos (goofily and pointlessly titled "Anarchy" and "Rocket Science," respectively). Really, From the Cradle to the Stage offers pretty much perfect fodder for committed Rage fans sharing the band's celebratory mood, but won't prove nearly as crucial to casual observers -- lest they consider live albums valid replacements for greatest-hits sets.

HEAVEN & HELL: [2007] Radio City Music Hall Live [DCD]

In 2006, the thunderous four-man Sabbath line-up fronted by Ronnie James Dio reformed in the studio to record three new tracks for Rhino’s Black Sabbath: The Dio Years. The chemistry between Dio, Vinny Appice and original Sabbath members Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler was so explosive that they agreed to officially reunite under the group name Heaven And Hell the title of their revered first album and hit the road. Marking the first time the hard rocking quartet had played live together in fifteen years, the launch of the Heaven And Hell tour has unleashed furious sonics and an awesome metal spectacle that’s been ecstatically received by fans. SOZIEDAD ALKOHOLIKA: [2003] Tiempos Oscuros

Formerly known as Amonal, Spanish five-piece rock act Soziedad Alkoholika got involved in the Basque scene by the end of the 1980s, making its debut with the release of a demo called Intoxicación Etílica in 1990, followed by a self-titled album and an EP called Feliz Falsedad, released in 1992. A year later, the band started a small venues tour, successfully playing in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Holland, and France. In 1995 the group founded its own record label Mil a Gritos, issuing Ratas that same year. By the end of 1998, Soziedad Alkoholika recorded three performances, issuing a live record called Directo in 1999, followed by 2000's Polvo en Los Ojos.
