HEAVENS GATE: Planet e

A German band which formed in the late '80s, Heaven's Gate plays a hybrid sort of Power Metal that mixes elements of Nocturnal Rites and Gamma Ray, but also the occasional flair of someone like Queen. Though the distortion sound featured here could probably be sharper, there's still a good mix of melody and toughness. Some bass experimentation, along with the above Queen reference, keeps it a bit away from the PM "norm."
There are numerous good tracks to be had, including "Terminated World," "Back From the Dawn," and "On the Edge." "Noah's Dream" has some shades of Helloween, and "Black Religion" starts acoustic before picking up the pace.

MERCYFUL FATE: Into the Unknown

Oh well. Formed in 1981 in Denmark, MERCYFUL FATE released two immensely popular, groundbreaking LPs in 1983 (“Melissa”) and 1984 (“Don’t Break The Oath”), standing out in two very good years not only because of the magnificent guitar duo of Hank Shermann (GUTRIX, FORCE OF EVIL, FATE) and Michael Denner (KING DIAMOND, FORCE OF EVIL) and the unique vocals of King Diamond (KING DIAMOND), but also because of the overt Satanism in the lyrics. Everyone seems to have forgotten that “Come To The Sabbath” was one of the songs Tipper Gore crusaded against in the mid-80s. Anyhow, they broke up in 1985 before getting back together in 1993. A lot of folks don’t like the albums MERCYFUL FATE released after the reunion. As a metal reviewer, I am expected to be crass, so I will give them the one-fingered salute. This isn’t the same as early 80s MERCYFUL FATE - the sound is more modern, the bass mixed way down and the songs usually aren’t as long. That said, “the king is dead, long live the king.” “Lucifer” is a fairly pointless intro, a Satanic rendition of the Lord’s Prayer. “The Uninvited Guest” smashes in, pounding across the landscape to a great shred. Denner and Shermann are just awesome together as King Diamond breaks out the falsetto and the varied vocals we’ve come to love. The guitars are crunchy and crackling, the drums fast yet purposeful. This is how you open an album.

AGENT STEEL: (2007) Alienigma

The new album from AGENT STEEL entitled "Alienigma". The legend that is AGENT STEEL began in 1984 when JOHN CYRIIS and CHUCK PROFUS created the idea of forming a speed metal band with the lyrical focus centred on science fiction and extraterrestrial themes. Not only was the concept entirely different from anything that had gone before, the music also reflected the uniqueness of the idea. Thrash metal was in its very early stages. This same year, AGENT STEEL recruited JUAN GARCIA from ABATTOIR and the AGENT STEEL - SKEPTICS APOCALYPSE album deal was recorded.

The album was tracked at Harrows Studios (ASPHYX, PENTACLE, OCCULT, SOULBURN etc.) in Holland. It's what DESASTER is all about: 'A FIST-IN-YOUR-FACE METAL ATTACK! Beware and be prepared for sharp riffs, pounding drums, roaring bass and screaming hell..."

EPICA: (2007) The Divine Conspiracy

Epica took the best of TPA and the best of CtO. The Black Metal parts come in from Mark and drums. The Symphonic parts come from Simone and choir. The Prog parts well just listen to the songs. Epica has really found there sound here and it's not simple Gothic metal oh no it's beyond what you would find in Gothic Metal bands. They took a big risk here with this CD and in my view it has paid off big time. They can no longer be place in the the same catagore as Within Temptation, Sirenia, and other bands like them. Gone are in of the ways to make them seem like Evanescence. Just any exmpale of how different they are from those other bands listen to Death of a Dream. They asked Sander Gommans to help out with this song. He had Mark go right to the heart of Black and Death Metal. Sander using the Death grunts Mark using the Black metal screams. If not for Simone and the chior this would have be falt out Black/Death Metal. Yeah it's that heavy.
Then there is there 14 minute long song The Divine Conspiracy. It's very different for Epica because it changes so many times in the song and not something you would really ever see out side of Prog metal. The only other femme metal band that will have a song this long is Nightwish. So if you want a band that is playing by there rules pick up Epica's Divine Conspiarcy.

Track Listing
1. Indigo-Prologue

ICED EARTH: (2007) Framing Armageddon: Something Wicked Pt. 1

In 1998, Iced Earth released an album called Something Wicked This Way Comes . The final 20 minutes of that album featured the debut of the "Something Wicked" trilogy, a three-part epic overview of a story written and created by band mastermind Jon Schaffer. While the above trilogy was only an overview, the entire story was written and laid waiting to be told. Now, almost 10 years later, after years of hard work and contemplation, Schaffer has delivered the first part of what could be his magnum opus. "Framing Armageddon (Something Wicked Part I)" is the first of two albums weaving a thrilling Sci-Fi tale of mankind s invasion of Earth, the planet occupied by the direct descendents of the Grand Architect of the Universe. These descendents, the Setians, are the Earth's most ancient culture, and are the wisest, most peaceful race in existence.
Not only is the story told through the music and lyrics, but in true Iced Earth fashion, through the album artwork as well. Over the years Schaffer has established a loyal record-buying fanbase through quality craftsmanship that runs through every facet of the band and their output. After the very successful release of the teaser single "Overture of the Wicked", it's certain that the fans will be utterly blown away by "Framing Armageddon (Something Wicked Part I)". Both musically and visually, this album will NOT disappoint.

MOTORHEAD: Kiss of Death

Motorhead's twenty-third album, this year's "Kiss Of Death," is no different. It's a little short on surprises, but it covers all of the band's well-known and perfected bases, so the songs have a tried and true sound. The album is ripe with all of the Motorhead goods: groovey guitar riffs/leads, speed punk drumming, and frontman Lemmy Kilmister's famous throat cancer vocals and usually earnest lyrics.
"Sucker," bolstered by a propulsive, blistering riff, gets the album off on a strong foot (and would also make a great show starter). Later on, "One Night Stand" and "Under The Gun" are highlighted by great, wailing, ascending guitar solos, and songs like "Trigger" (which also features a classically catchy Motorhead chorus that'll stick to your brain), "Be My Baby," and "Kingdom of the Worm" all sport deep, adherent grooves, making them among the year's top cuts in speed metal. The acoustic tear-jerker, "God Was Never On Your Side" (which is just as depressing as previous ballads like 1993's "Don't Let Daddy Kiss Me") also comes to mind when thinking of favorite tracks, and so do the fiery, chugging "Living In The Past," the toe-tapping rhythm of "Christine," and the super fast (almost careening) closer, "Going Down." The bonus material, "R.A.M.O.N.E.S.," is a cool track, but it's not worth going out of your way to get because it has shown up on a couple of other places in the past.
In short, "Kiss Of Death" might not be exactly unpredictable, but it will almost definitely satisfy any fan who buys today's Motorhead albums. And it might not quite rank up there next to "Ace Of Spades," but you should still definitely go ahead and add this one to your collection.

S.O.D.: Live at Budokan

Stormtroopers of Death, more commonly known as S.O.D., formed in New York in 1985. They are commonly credited as being among the first bands to fuse hardcore punk with thrash metal into a new sound dubbed crossover thrash. They have also been the target of controversy due to their politically-incorrect lyrics, in particular a track named "Speak English or Die". The British band Concrete Sox responded to the aforementioned song with a parody entitled "Speak Siberian or Die." Not all found them offensive, however; in 2000, the Japanese band Yellow machinegun recorded their own version of "Speak English or Die" on a tribute album titled "Speak Japanese or Die". Finally, S.O.D. member Dan Lilker has stated: "The lyrics were never intended to be serious, just to piss people off."
