KATATONIA - Last Fair Deal Gone Down [2001]

Whether or not this album's title refers to bluesman Robert Johnson's classic song of the same name, Katatonia is still singing the blues in their own way here, even if their style has nothing else to do with the blues as a genre. Continuing in the vein of their previous release, Tonight's Decision, this is depressing, heavy alternative rock with a notable Cure influence -- Katatonia is not really playing metal anymore here. The production has been sharpened on this album compared to its predecessor, accentuating the quiet verse/loud chorus dynamics the band so often uses, making the loud parts hit harder and the softer parts come through with more detail. Meanwhile, frontman Jonas Renske has continued to grow as a vocalist, showing greater range while also maintaining that worried, defeated delivery. Not many singers can trot out chorus after chorus of woeful lyrics such as "Burn down my house/Stab me in the heart" ("Chrome") and "When you have no one/No one can hurt you" ("Don't Tell a Soul") and make it sound so convincing. Song-wise, there are obvious standouts -- "Teargas," "Clean Today," and "Sweet Nurse" -- but the album is well-paced and consistent throughout, the only real weak spot being the chorus on "We Must Bury You," where Renske reaches a little too hard for the high notes. That's a minor quibble, though; this is an excellent album on the whole: heavy, tuneful, and thick with atmosphere and melancholy.

RAGE - Reflections Of A Shadow (Remastered-2003)

It's amazing to think of just how long Rage has been issuing great heavy metal albums. 1990's Reflections of a Shadow is the band's 5th album, and they've released about a dozen since then. Yet they have remained mostly unnoticed, even by metal standards. It's a shame, because an album like Reflections of a Shadow should please all but the most extreme metal fans. It's uncompromisingly heavy, and bridges the gap between power metal and thrash with the same skill as bands like Angel Dust and Jag Panzer. It's not overly melodic, but it's not an all-out shred fest either. This is straightforward heavy metal with somewhat high-pitched vocals, and is reminiscent of bands like Helstar, Crimson Glory, and early Vicious Rumors.
Reflections of a Shadow is another in a long line of quality Rage albums, and is a great jumping-on point for new listeners.
Noise Records' 2002 reissue of Reflections of a Shadow is very impressive. You get digitally remastered sound, expanded liner notes, and the entire 5-song 1991 EP Extended Power as bonus tracks. All told, there are plenty of reasons to replace your old copy of this Rage album.

VINTERSORG - Till Fjälls [2001]

Vintersorg, the Otyg frontman's side project, often lends comparison to the latter band. A good possibility for why that is could be Vintersong's powerful and moving vocals. Even though I do not understand the language he is singing in, what he's saying speaks to me because of the power of his voice. This particular cd goes back and forth from heavy to melodic but there is a certain beauty present in every song. The photos in the liner notes take you to a place from legend, and fits perfectly with the music presented within. This cd is a must-buy for those who are tired of boring radio alternametal, and are looking for something new.

RAGE - Secrets In A Weird World (Remastered-2003)

Energized by the surprising popularity of Perfect Man, Rage sought to capitalize on their good streak, with 1989's Secrets in a Weird World. And to their credit, the German trio remained spot on from a stylistic standpoint, rehashing the melodic thrash formula that seemed to best suit their talents. Unfortunately, vocalist/bassist Peter "Peavey" Wagner neglected to bring any decent songs with him. Maybe his creative juices had been sapped by the sheer volume of material committed to this album's heralded predecessor, but whatever the reason, semimemorable moments like the great riff behind "Light Into the Darkness" or forceful thrashers "Time Waits for No One" and "Invisible Horizons" are few and far between here. Instead, the listener is castigated by overwhelmingly mediocre fare such as "Make My Day," "The Inner Search," and "Talk to Grandpa" (excuse me?). Never mind the nine-minute whatchamacallit that is "Without a Trace" -- not exactly an epic landmark in German metal history, and let's just leave it at that. So once again, it was back to the drawing board for Rage, who modestly began their slow crawl back to respectability with the following year's Reflections of a Shadow. [Noise/Sanctuary remastered, repackaged, and reissued Secrets in a Weird World in 2002, adding five bonus cuts, including live tracks.]

THE GATHERING - Mandylion [1995]

Though it has since been eclipsed by increasingly superb efforts, the Gathering's Mandylion was considered a groundbreaking achievement upon its release in 1995. The first album to juxtapose the formidable vocal talents of the newly arrived Anneke Van Giersbergen's in striking contrast with the group's progressive metal, much of the material sounds amazingly confident and cohesive from the very start, be it through the driving intensity of opener "Strange Machines" or the death metal-style double kick drum of "Eleanor." The singer's enviable vocal talents are also fully displayed throughout the album, whether playing the soft-spoken angel while harmonizing with herself on "In Motion #1 and "2," or portraying the menacing siren while exploring her entire range on "Leaves." Admittedly, the band does seem unsure about just how far they can take this new creation at times. They wander a tad too far afield on the rather aimless "Fear the Sea," never really bring things into focus on the largely instrumental title track, and then bashfully hide a short passage of Enya-like ethereal beauty within the sprawling "Sand and Mercury." Still, all things considered, Mandylion has stood the test of time quite well and will provide an excellent second or third glimpse into this exciting band's discography.

THE GATHERING - Nighttime Birds [1997]

The most immediately striking aspect of Nighttime Birds is that the Gathering does not have an ordinary singer or death metal growler; instead, they have metal diva Anneke Van Giersbergen, whose voice often recalls Björk and may range from a powerful, throaty wail to a sweet tuneful caress that belies her deliberate, crunching musical accompaniment. As with Mandylion, the Gathering no longer really sounds like a traditional death metal band; the music is mostly melodic (yet tinged with sorrow), slow to mid-tempo progressive metal, with Van Giersbergen's distinctive voice soaring above the band's nicely varied textures. It's a fine effort, one that marks the Gathering as a band that bears watching, especially if they vary the tempo and mood a bit more.

SIX FEET UNDER - Bringer of Blood [2003]

Originally a side project for Cannibal Corpse vocalist Chris Barnes and former Obituary guitarist Allen West, Six Feet Under eventually became a full-time proposition when friction between Barnes and his other bandmates became too much to bear. Featuring ex-Death bassist Terry Butler and drummer Greg Gall in the rhythm section, Six Feet Under issued their debut album, Haunted, in 1995. Barnes subsequently quit Cannibal Corpse, and Six Feet Under issued the stopgap EP Alive and Dead in 1996 to tide fans over until the following year's full-length, Warpath. Third album Maximum Violence appeared in 1999. Graveyard Classics followed a year later and 2001's True Carnage featured guest vocals from Ice-T. Double Dead arrived in 2002, followed by Bringer of Blood in 2003, Graveyard Classics, Vol. 2 in 2004, 13 and the Decade in the Grave box in 2005, Commandment in 2007, and Death Rituals in 2008.

KATATONIA - Brave Murder Day [1996]

The first of two Katatonia discs to feature Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth subbing for regular vocalist Jonas Renske, Brave Murder Day is perhaps the most thorough and accomplished first-phase release from the Swedish death/doom outfit. The music is simple, almost trance-like gothic metal topped with Åkerfeldt's signature shouts and growls. Dynamics aren't exactly places at a premium on Brave Murder Day, but quieter moments on tracks like "Day" are a nice touch. These softer spots never really hint at the band's coming genre shift, and unlike later outings, there are no borderline alternative rock moments on Brave Murder Day. This should delight fans of Katatonia's earliest recordings. Consistent and committed to its gloomy theme, this 1997 Century Media offering represents the metallic high-water mark from an ever-evolving group.

THE GATHERING - If Then Else [2000]

What can be said about the cosmic rock act that hasn't already been said? Surpassing every rock and metal trend, the Gathering can do no wrong. Everything they touch turns to gold and this release seems to glimmer brighter than all before it. For some bands, there is a point in a career where everything clicks -- every nuance, every guitar tone, every vocal hook -- and the entire album just comes together. If-Then-Else is that album. From Anneke's blistering performance on the appropriately titled opener "Rollercoaster," which takes the listener on a loud, cerebral journey through the past and present creative eclipses of the band, to the haunting introspection of "Amity." A deep crash of lush melody and tempest aggression encounter one another on "Analog Park" and "Saturnine," creating a timeless focal point for the listener to fall into. Anneke's performance has never blazed this bright, as she channels out all of her famous ardor into an angelic sound, which can only be experienced through the intimacy of headphones. Take, for example, her dynamism on the doom rocker "Shot to Pieces" or her unleashed torment of "Herbal Movement" -- both send a shiver down the spine as she journeys the unexplored regions of her band. Rene and Frank craft a burgeoning wall of sound, evoking the spirit of the evil metal version of the Dust Brothers, while Hans and Hugo romance a rhythm section that owes more toward early Bowie than anything metal. After toying with commercialism on the previous studio album, How to Measure a Planet, success continues to elude this sharp, brilliant band, but one senses bigger things are in the works for the band and for loyal Gathering followers. Highest possible recommendation.

RAGE - Perfect Man (Remastered-2003)

German metalheads Rage had decided to disband after their disappointing second album, Execution Guaranteed; but it took band prime mover Peter "Peavey" Wagner less than a year to have second thoughts, so he proceeded to rebuild from the ground up. First by penning a new batch of quality songs, then by bringing in new musicians in guitarist Manni Schmidt and drummer Chris Efthimiades so as to reconfigure Rage from a quartet into a trio, making them "stronger, faster, better than they were before," as the saying goes. Sure enough, the resulting LP, 1988's exemplary Perfect Man, became the most successful and enduring of their career. With undeniable winners like "Wasteland," "Don't Fear the Winter," and the title track fueling its charge down the heavy metal autobahn, Perfect Man boasted a perfect combination of razor-sharp brutality and crisp production values. Even when they ease off the velocity meter, classic metal-inspired tunes such as "In the Darkest Hour" and "Sinister Thinking" exude a leaner, meaner front of attack, neatly avoiding the pitfalls of needless synthesizers and overbaked songwriting that together had crushed the life out of Execution Guaranteed. What's more, by weighing in at a hefty 14 tracks, Perfect Man is quite the model of productivity and value for money in the pre-CD age -- even if its high compositional standards take a noticeable dip toward the second half. So what's the final verdict? Well, in a career that by all accounts was seriously devoid of unquestionable highlights, Perfect Man shines as Rage's greatest achievement. [Noise/Sanctuary remastered, repackaged, and reissued Perfect Man in 2002, adding five live and unreleased bonus cuts to boot.]

APOPTYGMA BERZERK - The Apocalyptic Manifesto (1992)

Consisting of tracks from its European debut, Soli Deo Gloria, as well as previous singles and remixes, Apopcalyptic Manifesto is Apoptygma Berzerk's first release on Metropolis. While it showcases Stephan Groth's earlier and colder moments of his post-industrial project, the framework is set in place for his future endeavors with techno and electronic body music. Highlights include the militant "Bitch" and "Electronic Warfare," which explode with shots of laser-like synth attacks. Fitting in gracefully is a cover of the Velvet Underground's "All Tomorrow's Parties," which is successfully converted into a dancefloor anthem.

ARMORED SAINT - Saints Will Conquer (Live)(1988)

The final Armored Saint recording to feature Dave Prichard before the guitarist's untimely passing, Saints Will Conquer is a respectable but rather plain live offering that did little to further the group's artistic or career interests. Prichard handles his instrumental duties with verve and efficiency, and his partners-in-metal also keep their end of the musical bargain on this rather short eight-song set. John Bush (vocals) and Joey Vera (bass) are most notable throughout this and every Armored Saint recording, as they both project a decidedly British metal essence with great personal style. While the group never ascended to the heights of '80s metal success or influence, songs like "Can U Deliver" and "Long Before I Die" might qualify as near-classics. And with one of their era's most potent metal lineups, none of these tracks suffer from shoddy live performances. Among the many curious song omissions is the group's minor hard rock radio hit "Isolation," which would have been a much better down-tempo choice than "No Reason to Live." "March of the Saint" is another fan favorite conspicuous by its absence from the track list. Metal fans new to this band would do much better to seek out the 2001 anthology Nod to the Old School for a nice overview of Armored Saint's musical credentials, as Saints Will Conquer lacks the conceptual effort required of a great live recording.

ARMORED SAINT - Delirious Nomad (1985)

Having launched their career in promising fashion with the very well-received March of the Saint album, Los Angeles-based Armored Saint now seemed poised to take things to the next level and become one of the '80s biggest metal stars. Further buoyed by widespread critical approval, the band and their label, Chrysalis, were especially careful when planning to record 1985's all-important follow-up, Delirious Nomad. Enlisting the services of top metal producer Max Norman was supposed to be the final piece of the puzzle, and all involved were confident that this would be the band's "career" album. But while Delirious Nomad was certainly a more refined, more confident effort than its predecessor, it also felt somewhat less vital and spontaneous -- contrived even. Standouts like "Over the Edge," "For the Sake of Heaviness," and "In the Hole" are meticulous studio creations which proved the band's songwriting talents were indeed improving from strength to strength. But while the band was convinced that they'd successfully captured their "live sound" for the first time, many old-school fans flatly disagreed. For these, Delirious Nomad was missing that certain elemental spark of excitement which had made their debut so memorable, and the off-the-cuff looseness of rehashed older material like "You're Never Alone" and "Released" arguably proves their point. Still, the stunning beauty of the epic "Aftermath," with its glorious smorgasbord of harmony guitars, represents a career peak by any standard. Finally, for a band which always took itself perhaps a bit too seriously, Armored Saint was approaching maximum paranoia here, with songs like "Nervous Man" and the aforementioned "Over the Edge," both brimming with high-strung tension. Apparently, so was the band, who parted with founding guitarist Phil Sandoval as soon as the album was completed.

DEATH ANGEL - Frolic Through The Park (1988)

by Eduardo Rivadavia
Death Angel's second effort, 1988's Frolic Through the Park, continued to improve on its technical thrash formula, as the band's developing musical ability began to do their ambitious songwriting some justice. "Why You Do This," "Devil's Metal," and "Confused" are prime examples of the band's intricate sound, which, unfortunately, tended to sacrifice concise hooks and melody for overblown song structures and arrangements. The only exception turns out to be the album's strongest cut, "Bored," which shows a rare sense of humor and musical restraint. Also of note is the excellent playing of guitarist Rob Cavestany, who holds everything together with his tasteful and skillful axe work.

SIX FEET UNDER - Double Dead (2002)

by Steve Huey

ARMORED SAINT - March of The Saint (1984)

Throughout the '80s, you'd be hard-pressed to find an American heavy metal band which sounded more British than Armored Saint. While most of their contemporaries seemed preoccupied with the fast-growing thrash metal movement, here was a group of committed purists who were simply updating traditional metal at its best for the '80s generation. By the same token, the band was never able to benefit from the perks of being associated with a "scene" per se, which might explain their relative obscurity despite consistently issuing such quality material. But, for the record, with the exception of 1990's also stellar Symbol of Salvation, never was the group's bombastic style better represented than on their 1984 debut March of the Saint, which is so straightforward a metal record, it's almost hard to describe. An orchestrated guitar theme introduces the memorable title track, and further highlights such as "Can U Deliver," "Madhouse," and the astonishing "Take a Turn" are as commendable for their maturity and power as they are for their sense of economy. The dual-guitar team of Dave Prichard and Phil Sandoval is simply incredible considering their young ages (too bad they would soon fall out), dueling it out for solo after amazing solo throughout the disk. The album's second half isn't quite as strong as the first, but March of the Saint still qualifies as an overlooked classic of American metal.

DEATH ANGEL - The Ultra Violence (1987)

by Eduardo Rivadavia
Though they were immediately pegged as the runts of the Bay Area thrash metal scene for barely being old enough to drive, Death Angel quickly silenced most critics with their ambitious first album, The Ultra-Violence. Technically on par with many of their older peers, the album still showed a lot of room for growth, however -- especially in the songwriting department. "Evil Priest" and "Kill As One" thrash out convincingly enough, but "Mistress of Pain" and "Voracious Souls" are the only somewhat fully realized songs on the album. And at over ten minutes, the yawn-inducing multi-part title track is the best example of the group's desperate desire to impress with quantity, instead of quality. Thankfully, the band would continue to improve, and subsequent efforts saw them gradually fulfill their promise.

KATATONIA - Jhva Elohim Meth... The Revival (1992)

by Eduardo Rivadavia
Although already active in one shape or another since 1987, Sweden's up-and-coming Katatonia were condensed to a duo of vocalist/drummer Jonas "Lord Seth" Renkse and guitarist/bassist Anders "Blackheim" Nyström at the time of 1992's Jhva Elohim Meth...The Revival. Essentially their first demo of a year previous now made commercially available, its five tracks (two of them, "Midwinter Gates" and "Crimson Tears," bookending atmospheric instrumentals) showed great maturity as compared to the group's only slightly more established doom/death counterparts in England: the unholy trinity of Anathema, My Dying Bride, and Paradise Lost. Indeed, "Without God," "Palace of Frost," and "The Northern Silence" were all leaden of pace and sorrowful of tone, with memorable melodies and riffs that instantly secured Katatonia their contender status in anticipation of their acclaimed Dance of December Souls debut album the following year. [Jhva Elohim Meth...The Revival was later included in 2004's Brave Yester Days collection.]

APOPTYGMA BERZERK - Live in Europe '98 (1999)

by Steve Huey
The Norwegian industrial band Apoptygma Berzerk is actually one Stephan Groth, sometimes known as Grothesk. Groth released his first single as Apoptygma Berzerk in 1991 and got his international break with an appearance on the Sex, Drugs and E.B.M. compilation. He signed with Metropolis Records, which issued a career summation in 1998 entitled The Apopcalyptic Manifesto, a collection of early singles and tracks from the Norwegian album Soli Deo Gloria. APOPTYGMA BERZERK - 7 (1996)

Starting an industrial dance album with a mock-classical organ recital isn't the easiest of propositions, but when Grothesk kicks his arrangement in gear fully with the EBM pulse and beat of "Love Never Dies (Part 1)," then 7 hits its stride and for the most part doesn't lose it.
By this point, Grothesk and his act had moved from being inspired by a sound to being one of the few straight-up practitioners of it, and like the best of his own heroes, his range of inspirations had widened considerably. KMFDM may have sampled Orff's "Carmina Burana" first, but the inclusion of source material ranging from the Shadows and Red House Painters to Aphex Twin is reflected in the just-varied-enough flow of the album. The prime Depeche Mode-inspired jones of Grothesk, in particular, is showcased to wonderful effect throughout the album, often shading the more intense songs like "Deep Red" and the amped-up remix of "Mourn" with a calmer, almost tearjerking air. Standout examples at slower speeds include the original mix of "Mourn," a ballad with a fairly steady rock Beat dedicated to Kurt Cobain (using the riff from Nirvana's cover of "The Man Who Sold the World" beautifully), and the mega-ballad (and proud of it) "Nearer," with one of the best synth-string arrangements in the field or out of it. But there's one other band who started in the early '80s who gets an homage in particular -- OMD. Their debut single, "Electricity," gets a cover here brimming with the upbeat joy of the original -- the instantly recognizable hook is slowed down a touch, no more -- while spiked with a quicker pace and a winning vocal from Grothesk. That he actually sings a bit slower than OMD did, contrasted with the high-velocity music, actually makes the cover work even better.

HEAVENS GATE - Livin' In Hysteria (1991)

A mini-album, "Open the Gate and Watch!" was released in April 1990 and Heavens Gate again went on tour throughout Germany, this time with Lawdy.
Japan were quick to appreciate the Wolfsburgers' fast, heavy and furious style. JVC/Victor released both products in August 1990 as a "two in one" CD. The reactions to this release was so euphoric (positions in the Top 20 in several magazine charts) that the two top Japanese metal magazines, Burrn! and Metal Gear send their journalists to Germany, in order to further the cause of this new German metal band in the land of the rising sun. Japanese radio was also hit by Heavens Gate fever - cult DJ Captain Wada devoted an entire hour to a Heavens Gate Special. February 1992 saw the band signing a new contract with Steamhammer / SPV, following the close-down of No Remorse Records. "Livin' in Hysteria" had been released six months before, after having been recorded at Horus Sound and produced by Charlie Bauerfeind. Some of the songs on this album, "Best Days Of My Life" and "We Got The Time" amongst others, were selected by two German TV stations for their educational, anti-drugs video, "Geführliche Sehnsucht" (Dangerous Desire) which was shown in schools all over the country.

HEAVENS GATE - In Control (1989)

Heavens Gate was formed in Spring 1987, playing at the time under the name Carrion. Their first demo featuring Thomas Rettke (voc.), Bonny Bilski (guit.), Ingo Millek (guit.), Manni Jordan (bass) and Thorsten Muller (drums) soon came to the interested ears of Frank Bornemann, the leader of the legendary German rock band Eloy and owner of Metromania Publishing.
After signing up with Warner Chappell / Metromania, Ingo Millek left the band in Summer 1987 and was immediately replaced by Sascha Paeth. No Remorse Records placed the band under contract in October 1987 and the signing was following by a session in Hannover's Horus Sound Studio, where they recorded their debut album "In Control", produced by Frank Bornemann and Tommy Hansen (Victory, Pretty Maids). The album was released in January 1989 and soon afterwards the band were on the road as much hailed support for W.A.S.P, as well as on their own, well-attended headliner tour through Germany.
