Y & T: 1976 - Yesterday & Today

Years before unleashing their critically acclaimed Earthshaker album in 1981, San Francisco's Y&T had enjoyed a brief, semi-covert existence in the mid-'70s, when they still went by their original name, the pre-shortening Yesterday & Today. Signed to the tiny London label, the quartet recorded two albums during this phase, the first of which was this eponymous 1976 debut. And although their name eventually changed, this album already boasted most of the sonic traits which would characterize the band's entire career thereafter, most notably, amazingly high musicianship standards all around and searing leads from main man Dave Meniketti. Highlights include the party-hardy anthem "25 Hours a Day," the emotional, atmospheric ballad "My Heart Plays Too," and the strutting tour de force "Fast Ladies (Very Slow Gin)." The excellent closer "Beautiful Dreamer" would also survive long into the band's latter days as a regular concert favorite, and sees Meniketti doing his best Sammy Hagar impression. Which raises the compelling theory that, in effect, Yesterday & Today actually bridged the gap between Montrose and Van Halen in the succession process of Californian hard rock. Given the quality of this debut, it's really a shame they didn't fare as well as either band..... by Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide

2. 25 Hours a Day (3:37)
3. Game Playing Woman (5:21)

Y&T - 1978 - Struck Down

Struck Down was Yesterday & Today's second long-player, and their last release prior to changing their name to Y&T in the early '80s. And though not as consistent as the band's rock-solid debut two years earlier, it too collects a wealth of enjoyable material performed by an already very confident and mature band. Most noticeable of all, Struck Down is astoundingly heavy for its time, with high-energy cuts like the title track, "Road," and "Dreams of Egypt" packing loads of guts and swagger and evincing a bite which aptly captures the band's legendary live power onto vinyl. A few pedestrian moments, including the cheesy shuffle "Nasty Sadie," the rather one-dimensional "I'm Lost," and the psychedelic anachronism "Stargazer" keep this from being a fully satisfactory set, but they certainly could have done a lot worse... by Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide

Y&T - 1981 - Earthshaker

1981's Earthshaker is the only unanimous moment of Y&T's lengthy career. The only studio album that came close to capturing the power and energy of the San Francisco quartet's legendary concerts onto disc, the band's third L.P. was their first for new label A&M, and the first to see their original moniker Yesterday & Today shortened to its better-known incarnation. Vein-busting metal anthems like "Hurricane" and "Knock You Out" boast a menacing swagger not seen before or since, and, even though they slow things down just a bit, melodic hard rockers like "Let Me Go" and the classic "Rescue Me" never waver in intensity or purpose. Admittedly, a few of the mid-paced rockers ("Hungry for Rock," "Young and Tough") have not aged all that well, but in the manic "Squeeze," bassist Phil Kennemore takes over lead vocals so that regular frontman Dave Meniketti can deliver one of the most passionate, over-the-top lead guitar performances of his career. And Y&T save the best for last, climaxing with their signature power ballad, the dramatic "I Believe in You" -- easily one of the decade's best examples of the style, bar none. Simply put, Earthshaker is a virtual force of nature, and its no wonder Y&T found it an impossible act to follow...by Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide

Y&T - 1982 - Black Tiger

Released in the wake of the critically acclaimed Earthshaker, 1982's Black Tiger was expected to catapult Y&T's career to the next level. But as the lifeless-treatment-given opening instrumental "From the Moon" makes immediately obvious, it's as if the band, producer Max Norman, and record label (A&M [the home of numerous successful pop acts, but clueless when it came to hard rock]) were all intent on botching the mission from the get-go. Rarely has a band sounded so stiff and stunted in the studio as Y&T did here. One can almost sense the band's sphincters clenching up when the red light goes on in the recording booth, such is the stale, uncomfortable vibe captured on Black Tiger. Not even the furious attack of "Open Fire" (later to become an explosive monster of a song in their live show) can save the day, and the dramatic closer "Winds of Change" simply pales in comparison to Earthshaker's piece de resistance, "I Believe in You." Uneven songwriting is also to blame, and for every winning track they present Y&T always manages to follow it with a total stinker. For example, impressive moments like "Forever" (which expands on the "From the Moon" melody with great results) and "Barroom Boogie" are interspersed with embarrassing drivel like "Hell or High Water" and "My Way or the Highway." In the end, Black Tiger made for a frustrating listening experience, and its commercial failure would strike a blow to Y&T's confidence from which they'd never fully recover...by Ed Rivadavia, All Music

Y&T - 1983 - Mean Streak

Following the unexpected commercial underachiever that was their fourth album, Black Tiger, San Francisco's Y&T were reeling in confusion. All had seemed rosy back in 1981, when their comeback effort, Earthshaker, had been heralded as an instant classic by media and fans alike; but its successor had lacked both substance and energy by comparison, leaving the group uncertain of what to try next. Making sure to rediscover the edgy guitar tones of old for 1983's Mean Streak was a good start, but inconsistent songwriting continued to plague Y&T, who, as usual, fell way short of replicating the power of their live performances in a studio setting. Mean Streak's title track opened the proceedings in promising enough fashion, its raw energy and aggressive riffing making it one of the band's strongest singles yet. But the very next cut, "Straight Through the Heart," quickly ground everything to a halt with its flattened sonics and lurching rhythm; it took two, very tastefully executed power ballads like "Lonely Side of Town," and "Midnight in Tokyo" to salvage Side One. Side Two got under way with the competent, if rather tame "Breaking Away," only to mar a couple of commendable attempts at re-ignition in "Hang 'Em High," and "Sentimental Fool" (see its classy guitar harmonies) with the terrifying cock rock drivel of "Take You to the Limit" and "Down and Dirty." In the end, Mean Streak was another unbalanced outing that left most hard rock fans nonplussed, and serious Y&T supporters, who knew what the band was capable of, sorely disappointed...by Ed Rivadavia, All Music

Y&T - 1984 - In Rock We Trust

Y&T's difficulties in the recording studio continued with their sixth album, 1984's In Rock We Trust. You'd think the San Francisco quartet could have figured this out by now, but despite experimenting with a number of different approaches, recording techniques, and big-name producers, Y&T had yet to successfully capture their scorching live energy on vinyl. With Judas Priest producer Tom (Colonel) Allom on board this time around, they did manage to sound a little looser and more relaxed than on recent efforts, but to be quite honest, In Rock We Trust still paled in comparison to the freewheeling intensity of 1981's landmark Earthshaker album. "Masters and Slaves" and the driving "Break Out Tonight!" are among the highlights contained here, but the patriotic opener, "Rock & Roll's Gonna Save the World," pushes the cheese meter to the max. Making matters worse, on the ensuing tour the band would perform it in the company of their new mascot, the silver android depicted on the album's cover (aka Rock). The textbook power ballad "This Time" isn't half-bad and no doubt served its purpose as perfect "end of the prom" fodder, but consumers remained unimpressed and Y&T's slump continued unabated....by Ed Rivadavia, All Music

Y&T - 1985 - Down For The Count

After years of beating their collective head against the post of hard rock stardom, Y&T finally succumbed to the commercial conventions of the '80s and bowed to the synthesizer gods with 1985's Down for the Count. Under the guidance of new producer Kevin Beamish (REO Speedwagon, Saxon), Y&T joined the perm-haired masses then issuing like dandruff out of the California dust to redefine the meaning of the word "dumb." Not exactly a smash hit, the record is littered with faceless, going-nowhere-fast rockers like "Anything for Money" and "Looks Like Trouble." Even the relatively amusing "Don't Tell Me What to Wear" sounds completely forced when coming from a bunch of supposedly grown men. Out of this mucky muck, "Hands of Time" stands out as a fine, dramatic power ballad in the Y&T tradition -- anthemic and cheesy in all the right quantities. Following Down for the Count, Y&T's long-running relationship with A&M would finally come to and end, but the band would find small comfort at their new home, Geffen... by Ed Rivadavia, All Music

Y&T - 1985 - Open fire

As had been amply proved by their dismally recorded studio albums, Y&T's songs were simply made to be heard in a live setting. Arriving at the tail end of the band's association with A&M Records, Open Fire is hardly exceptional by live-album standards, but the difference between these performances and their studio counterparts is so immense that one has to wonder if the performances are even by the same band. Every forced lyric, every lame arrangement, and every lost nuance are forgotten as Y&T come to explosive life on this astounding set, which revisits the best moments from the band's early-'80s career, including "Rescue Me," "Forever," "Barroom Boogie," and "Open Fire." Later material like "Go for the Throat" and "Summertime Girls" is less impressive, and the inclusion of an old track ("25 Hours a Day") from their late-'70s origin as Yesterday & Today comes off as pedestrian at best. But a final encore of the beautifully cathartic "I Believe in You" is guaranteed to send everyone home happy... by Ed Rivadavia, All Music

Y&T - 1990 - Ten

By the time Y&T released Ten in 1990, they were well past their prime, but they at least had the chance of riding the tail end of the hair-metal era. However, Ten just didn't deliver the goods. "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" has a good riff, but much of the record lacks a strong hook -- it's just well-produced, slick mainstream metal without much style or flair. It's no surprise that the group packed it in (albiet temporarily) shortly after the release of Ten...by Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music

Y&T - 1995 - Musically Incorrect

Y&T were within reach of the Grail of rock & roll stardom many times in their long career. Unfortunately for the group, the ultimate prize always seemed to elude them in the end due to a series of mistakes and sheer bad luck. A legendary live band, the group never managed to translate their electric on-stage intensity into the studio, and despite their 20 years of service, they have now become little more than a blot on the American hard rock canvas.
Taking their name from a Beatles album, Yesterday. . . and Today, Yesterday & Today formed in San Francisco around 1973 with Dave Meniketti on vocals and lead guitar, Phil Kennemore on bass and Leonard Haze on drums. After stealing rhythm guitarist Joey Alves from a rival band, the foursome began to gig constantly around the Bay Area, opening for such heavyweights as Journey and the Doobie Brothers. They were eventually picked up by London Records, which released their eponymous debut in 1976 and followed it with Struck Down two years later. Neither album ended up being successful, though, and after being dropped from the label, the band spent another two years struggling to stay alive...by Ed Rivadavia, All Music

Y&T - 1990 - Y&T live

Too many rockers have made the mistake of never providing an official live album, but thankfully, Y&T isn't one of them. Recorded at the San Jose Cabaret in San Jose, CA on December 28 and 31, 1990, this CD paints a most impressive picture of the Deep Purple-influenced heavy metal/hard-rock band. Heavy metal enthusiasts who never saw Y&T live will wish they had after hearing this excellent album, which brilliantly captures the Bay Area headbangers' vitality. Turning its attention to material from the 1970s and 1980s, Y&T is in fine form on gems that range from "Black Tiger," "Beautiful Dreamer," and "Winds of Change" to "Hurricane," "Midnight in Tokyo," and "I'll Cry." Yesterday & Today Live is as melodic as it is forceful. In fact, headbangers who like their metal/hard rock with a lot of melody should make a point of obtaining this album, which is without a dull moment... by Alex Henderson, All Music

Y&T - 1998 - Endangered Species

Having been in mothballs since the early '90s, underrated West Coast rockers Y&T decided to give it another try later in the decade with the comeback album Endangered Species. And you couldn't blame them, as it seemed like just about every single supposedly "retired" hard rock band (Kiss, Ratt, Poison, etc.) was going back out on the road during this period. Only two longtime members were up for the reunion, however -- Dave Meniketti (vocals, guitar) and Phil Kennemore (bass, vocals) -- but the band's unmistakable anthemic hard rockin' style remains well represented here. Although often lumped in with the "pop-metal" set (and the group's biggest hit, "Summertime Girls," didn't exactly help matters much), Y&T was one of the heaviest bands to emerge from the Sunset Strip circa the late '70s/early '80s. Wisely, the group returned to the heavier approach of its earlier albums on Endangered Species, as evidenced by such standout rockers as "Hello! Hello! I'm Back Again," "Gimme the Beat," and "Can't Stop the Rain," plus the slightly more tranquil "Sail On By." True, only two participating original members usually doesn't mean a real "reunion," but in Y&T's case, Meniketti and Kennemore had no problem rekindling the flame on Endangered Species....by Greg Prato, All Music

Y&T - 2000 - BBC In Concert -Live On The Friday Rock Show

Out of all the heavy metal bands that appeared on the Billboard charts during the 1980s, one that appeared destined to lead the pack was Y&T. After all, they'd been honing their sound since the '70s, had built a large cult following, and with each successive album had several new anthems for teenaged males to pump their fists in the air to. But aside from scoring a few moderately sized MTV hits, Y&T somehow slipped through the cracks, as groups such as Mötley Crüe (who used to open for Y&T on the Sunset Strip) and Quiet Riot surpassed them on the charts. Regardless, Y&T's music still packs quite a punch -- sure, it's "unmistakably '80s," but it certainly stands up much better than the average metal band from the era. The group was always a top live act throughout its career, and the 12-track BBC in Concert: Live on the Friday Rock Show does not disappoint. Containing selections from two separate shows (one from the Black Tiger era, the other from the In Rock We Trust era), it's quite impressive how the energy of the group's performance has been captured here, especially on such high-decibel rockers as "Open Fire," "Mean Streak," and "Lipstick and Leather," while the group experiences a "Bic lighter moment" with two different versions of "Rescue Me." Even though it doesn't contain their two best-known tracks, "Don't Stop Runnin'" and "Summertime Girls," BBC in Concert: Live on the Friday Rock Show is certainly not a bad summary of or starting point for this underrated band....by Greg Prato, All Music
