Ayreon - Universal Migrator Part 1: The Dream Sequencer

Universal Migrator Part 1: The Dream Sequencer is a progressive metal album released in 2000 by Dutch multi-instrumentalist Arjen Lucassen, and is the fourth album of his Ayreon project.
The Dream Sequencer features a musical style quite disparate from its de facto counterpart Flight of the Migrator, telling the story of a trip through time from a variety of perspectives, it features a prog-infused atmospheric feeling, with a softer and more melodic sound than that of Flight of the Migrator. To Arjen's pleasant surprise, both albums (which were released simultaneously) sold well and were received positively, with most fans purchasing both separate discs. In 2004, Arjen moved to a new record label - InsideOut Germany - and with this move came re-issues of all the previous Ayreon releases, including The Dream Sequencer. The special edition re-issue did not feature any bonus tracks or behind the scenes video footage, but instead merged both albums into a single release, titled Universal Migrator: Parts I & II. No new features were added, because Arjen felt it would be unfair to those fans who bought both albums originally, in 2000.

Ayreon - Into the Electric Castle A Space Opera

Into the Electric Castle is an epic prog rock opera from Dutch guitarist Arjen Lucassen. The sci-fi story centers around eight strangers brought together into a dimension of no space and no time. The characters in the story are played by varying lead singers, including former Marillion frontman Fish. The supporting cast is a who's who of proggers, which translates into superb musicianship. The story is standard sci-fi fare, but winds up being quite effective with the accompanying score. The massive coordination of such a large project is admirable, but to pull it off with such impressive resultsmore… is stunning. There are some moments that work better than others, but in sum this an energetic, fun, and original recording. There is a plethora of styles incorporated here, including progressive rock, progressive metal, neo-prog, fusion, space rock, jazz, folk, and classical. This campy classic helped to spawn a devout cult following for Ayreon and the man behind the music, Arjen Lucassen.

Senser - - Asylum

In 1993 Senser released two indie chart topping singles on Ultimate, Eject and The Key and during the summer they played most of the major festivals. The band were gaining a reputation for being one of the most exciting live acts around and found themselves on stage alongside Rage Against the Machine, The Levellers and Chumbawamba. In March 1994 Senser released their third single, Switch, which entered the National Chart at No.39 and the band underwent a heavy schedule of T.V, radio, press and live performances. Senser's first album, "Stacked Up", was released in May 1994, and entered the National Charts at No.4. With the success of their album, Senser's fan-base grew, enabling the band to play to sell-out crowds across the UK and Europe. In 1994 Senser could be seen on the UK festival circuit and supported Red Hot Chili Peppers at Reading festival. In Europe they played at Roskilde Festival (Denmark), 'Torhout and 'Werchter' (Belgium), and 'Pinkpop' (Holland) and toured as support for Henry Rollins. After a curtailed tour of Japan, they then returned to the UK. At the beginning of 1995 Senser toured the UK supported by Skunk Anansie before setting off to tour the U.S.A. with Moby. It was during this tour that the band decided to split over musical differences. Heitham, Haggis and John left formed a new band called Lodestar. The remaining members of Senser found a new drummer, Paul Soden, and set about writing Senser's second album. After a year of writing and rehearsing Senser took to the road again and appeared at Phoenix '96. During the spring of '97 they recorded the 2nd album with legendary producer Arthur Baker and engineer Kevin Porée, it had a similar eclectic sound to the first but had a more electronic feel. Whilst recording the album Kerstin became pregnant so the other members formed De-Senser to keep the ball rolling until they could tour again. This new project, dealt specifically with programmed techno and drum and bass. And in the summer of 1997 De-Senser released "Om" an instant hit at clubs across the UK.
In the summer of 1998 Kerstin was able to tour and the band released the second album, Asylum. This was followed by touring throughout '98 especially in areas such as Spain, Italy and France. Once again musical differences became apparent and in February 1999 the band decided to split. Senser still had to play two last festivals to honour their commitments so they invited original members Heitham, John and Haggis back to perform with them. The gigs were extremely successful and proved to the group that they still worked well together and soon the original line-up found themselves working together on a compilation album of Senser's back catalogue called Parallel Charge. Now several years on the band have reformed with the full original line-up and written a third new album SCHEMAtic. Drawing on their own personal styles, experiences and influences the new work represents a broad musical development from their past release and is an impressive return to form. in 2003, an early tour of the new material was performed to packed out, sweat drenched venues which not only proved that they are still widely loved and respected but showed that in today's world Senser's outlook is now more relevant than ever. Senser's song "States of Mind", from Stacked Up, was also used (without permission from the copyright holder) as the soundtrack to the well-known demoscene production State of Mind by Bomb.

Running Wild - - Rogues en Vogue

I look at my rum flask and see that it will last for the rest of my tiring day! My sword shows its lethal blade in the sun! The wind whispers to my mind songs of freedom and spells of wisdom! My muskets are full of gun powder! There is only an endless deep blue sea around me and a skull & bones flag saluting me above my one eyed covered head! Peace and tranquility all around! I take a sip of my precious black liquid! Oh what a lust to be free! I look at my CD player and the new Running Wild album is in! What more is there for me to say other than: Ready for boarding!
Maybe even Rock n' Rolf would not believe that he would make it that far so successfully until 2005, from his first steps with Granite Heart in the early 80's! But Running Wild is alive and kicking here once more! Mr. Kasparek has the ability of writing extra catchy songs with carried by the wind of hope choruses, tough riffs, melodical leads and a whole revolutionary atmosphere that surrounds the listener and transfers him into the land of freedom and serenity through internal catharsis! Is this so bad? Is it unacceptable to express your love for what you adore so much and have devoted your life to it? I don't think so! There are so many people who accuse Rolf and company of repeating themselves through the albums - and they have a good point there, for sure! But on the other hand, how many bands do you know that can still raise you to a higher emotional and mental plateau and make you feel strong enough - how many bands have real songs flowing with easiness and emotional richness? You know Running Wild is more than just a band! It is inspiration, true emotional experience, it is a direct injection of hope and positive energy straight into the heart of the modern Metal and Rock man! Of course the choice is yours, my friends!
The whole musical approach is a synopsis of Running Wild years from the magical and underestimated "Black Hand In" (1999) and "Pile of Skulls" (1999) albums and on, refreshed with new ideas full of emotional power! Rolf's main interest and Running Wild's main scope - Piracy Inc. - is also very vivid here! Maybe captain Rock should have tried to avoid certain repetitive issues about this stuff but then again...it's Running Wild man! It's like asking Albert King or Buddy Guy to play Thrash (this sounds interesting though)!
With songs such as "Draw The Line" or "Angel Of Mercy" we may try to find answers to many problems that bother us! This means that Running Wild are not only "that ugly pirate band:, they have a great touch with reality and try to explain the world through their own eyes! Just press the play button on your sound system and let the strength surround you! There is not even one chance that you will stop the flowing of this CD since the songs are very well written and roll on very nice! The production is also quite strange, meaning that certain instruments are far ahead at certain times! There has also been a slightly different approach in the effects used in the guitars and vocals compared to their previous works adding a touch of a more modern contact with nowadays! The songs are written in a way that they will be adored when played live! How many tons of beer and rum are needed in order to establish full mental orgasm when Running Wild perform live? Maybe countless! I am really eager to let my brain explode upon hearing the title song live, "Rogues En Vogue"! The diamonds which are hidden in the "Rogues En Vogue"'s black chest are: "Draw The Line", "Soul Vampires", "Rogues En Vogue", "Dead Man's Road", "Skeleton Dance", "Angel Of Mercy" and the epic major song "The War".
Let us hope that Rolf and his crew will decide to come by our country soon enough with their Jolly Roger! Until then let's hope that the black rum and the good weather will last long enough! Having exhausted all my strict album rating principles, "Rogues En Vogue" goes for:

Mekong Delta - Mekong Delta

In their first album we see some very promising material from MEKONG DELTA, their unique brand of technical thrash was quite ahead of it's time, a lot of these riffs are very unorthodox and combined with the odd timing and syncopation it makes for a compelling listen. The problem is that the album isn't terribly progressive and it's a little rough around the edges, the disparity between the good songs and the bad songs is quite large.
The opening track is a furious thrash number and is probably one of the fastest songs of their career, it's quite reminiscent of POSSESSED's Seven Churches album, especially the guitar solos. 'The Hut of Baba Yaga' is a very interesting song, an instrumental with some odd melodies and concepts brought forth, there really wasn't much like it around at the time and I really haven't heard something similar to this day, an exceptional song in concept and execution. One thing MEKONG DELTA became renowned for was their melding of thrash instrumentation within a classical framework, there are 2 songs on here of this nature, 'Interludium' is a great little example of this, with the bass nicely syncopated at the right times underneath the violins and the double kick coming in at just the right times to add to the brooding atmosphere. 'Toccata' is the best song on the album and is one of the best examples of their classical and thrash amalgam completely relying on thrash instrumentation and yet it still maintains the illusion of being a classical work, it's really eye opening stuff.
Overall their debut is quite patchy with songs like the 'Black Betty' cover being something of a joke in comparison to the songs like 'Toccata', it's still a very worthwhile album though, recommended to fans of early Teutonic and technical thrash metal bands like CORONER (if you want a thrash band that does covers amazingly then CORONER are a good bet too). - by Richard Ingham, Prog Archives

Epica - - The Phantom Agony

Dutch guitarist/vocalist Mark Jansen unveiled his highly anticipated post-After Forever undertaking — a new orchestral metal project named Epica — via 2004's The Phantom Agony album. Clearly patterned on Jansen's former band, Epica fuses his deathly croaking with the angelic tones of a classically trained mezzo-soprano named Simone Simons, over a lush foundation of symphonic power metal. However, as compared to After Forever's pre-established blueprint (and unfortunately, continual comparisons are inevitable here) songs like "Sensorium," "Cry for the Moon," and "Illusive Consensus"more… tend to prioritize guitars over keyboards, while making greater use of full-on choir backdrops. And although she is a gifted operatic talent by any definition, lead vocalist Simons simply lacks the sheer vocal prowess and versatility of After Forever's Floor Jansen. Whether this is the case by nature or design, one feels her talents are being underutilized; but then, perhaps Jansen didn't want her monopolizing the proceedings like the aforementioned Floor (although they apparently have no problem objectifying her sensual image on the album's cover). Furthermore, additional embellishments such as spoken word recitals, lyrics decried in Latin and Arabic, and complicated religious and philosophical exhortations featured on the likes of "Fa�ade of Reality," "Seif al Din," and the preposterously overwrought title track make the whole bloated work almost too pretentious to stomach. And for all of this grand conceptualizing (The Phantom Agony's intricately intertwined movements indeed amounting to a concept album), what you have here is a samey-sounding LP by symphonic metal standards: lyrically engaging and brave of vision, to be sure, but disturbingly short on songwriting chops, and ultimately devoid of the genre's dramatic and defining peaks and valleys of emotion. Having said all that, The Phantom Agony's daunting palette of colors is vast enough to probably convert a few disciples to the group's cause.

Belphegor - - The Goatreich- Fleshcult

Belphegor was formed in 1993, originally under the name Betrayer. After the release of their first demo, "Bloodbath in Paradise" the band became popular in the underground metal scene. Their first album The Last Supper was released by Lethal Records, the two following ones by Last Episode (now known as Black Attakk) which they called a "rip-off label" afterwards. After releasing their live album Infernal Live Orgasm on their own label Phallelujah Productions, they signed with Napalm Records. In 2003, they released Lucifer Incestus, their fourth full-length album. However, their relationship with Napalm Records did not last, as they said afterwards that the label didn’t support them enough and they were "fed up with this respectless treatment".[1] The band is currently signed with Nuclear Blast and has released two albums to date with them, Pestapokalypse VI and Bondage Goat Zombie.
In February-March 2007 the band toured North America with Unleashed, Krisiun and Hatesphere, and played at the famous Wacken Open Air festival in August. In January, founding member Sigurd underwent eye surgery, and has been unable to play since. On April 15th, they released Bondage Goat Zombie, and will tour Europe with Grave and supporting Nile. For a long time, it was not known whether Sigurd would be able to play or not, having reportedly undergone eye surgery at the beginning of 2008. However, Helmuth said that Sigurd had chosen to leave the band permanently. He was replaced with another guitarist, Morluch, who is currently listed on the band's MySpace page.

Beseech - - Souls Highway

It's always a pleasant surprise to hear a band you expected to dislike (due to being misinformed as to what the band sound like) turn out to be rather quite good, which is exactly the case with the latest album from Swedish gothic metallers Beseech. From the outset, it is hard to listen to 'Souls Highway' without making comparisons to Italy's own Lacuna Coil. Both bands have a beautiful, angelic sounding female vocalist, and a deep male vocalist and both of them play a very similar brand of gothic rock/metal. However, look a little deeper and you will notice that whilst Beseech will probably never more…

Blackfield - - Blackfield

A fantastic yet overlooked treasure, a work brimming with texture but listenable to anyone's taste, Blackfield's self-titled debut is an amazing album that really deserves all the attention it can get. It's the project of Steven Wilson (the mastermind behind No-Man and Porcupine Tree) and Aviv Geffen, who's apparently had a successful if controversial pop career in Israel. Count one for the "can anyone tell me why this isn't huge" file. You need this album. Wilson's singing is much more prominent, but AG handles half the writing/instrument duties, even if his voice is mostly the backing one. The sound is basically melancholy pop (for lack of an appropriate label), but wonderfully layered and textured and impeccably produced, topped off with gorgeous harmonies and writing a lot more thoughtful than you'd find in the pop world at large. And that's not to mention the writing in the melody department, which is almost otherworldly. There's a dreamlike quality to a lot of the album, from "Glow"'s soft bed of keyboards to "Lullaby"'s simple haunting piano line (which would almost actually make it a good lullaby if it wasn't done in a minor key with some very non-soothing lyrics). "Scars" shuffles along on a lively beat and shifts into a grand sweeping chorus, but it doesn't even seem out of place. Some heavy moments come and go but they never interfere with the lushness of the experience. The consistently depressing tone is really the only reason I haven't glued one of the CD trays on my stereo shut with this disc in it... yet.
Where Wilson on his own can take seven or eight or thirteen minutes to say something, Geffen's taste for brevity keeps everything here comfortably below five. Unfortunately that means the album itself tops off at around 43 including the 'new' bonus tracks, but there isn't a wasted second to be heard. "Where Is My Love?" was left off the original edition because they thought it didn't quite fit with the Blackfield sound - why they thought that, I can't imagine - and the mesmerizing "Perfect World" was apparently cut at the last minute. If you need this album (and you do), then you also need those tracks to complete the picture. Thankfully that mistake's been fixed by their inclusion here along with a live "Cloudy Now." Did I mention you need this album? You do. Your life will forever be just a tad incomplete without it. Blackfield is a collaboration between Israeli singer songwriter Aviv Geffen and British musician and producer Steven Wilson (also of Porcupine Tree).

Tourniquet - Vanishing Lessons

This album marked a significant change in the band's sound. No longer could TOURNIQUET be classified as they had been, mostly due to the hard rock instrumentation that permeates the record. Suffice it to say, the first album to boast Luke Easter at the vocal helm hasn't aged as well as their early thrash fests, nor does it stand a chance when grappling with its predecessors.
With this, TOURNIQUET single-handedly changed their sound, image and fanbase. "Vanishing Lessons" is a decent effort and I'd advise obtaining the re-release over the original if possible.

Tourniquet - Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance

The lyrics kept the pattern that began on Psycho Surgery and feature bizarre medical terminology. These terms and syndromes are used as metaphors for spiritual and social issues. The album title refers to color blindness and the title song uses it as a metaphor for lack of wisdom of sight from God. "Gelatinous Tubercles of Purulent Ossification" is about nicotine addiction that causes larynx benediction. The sound samples of the song are produced with Western Electric 5000 voice synthesizer. The 10 minute song "The Skeezix Dilemma" uses the board game Uncle Wiggily's (also a children's book series by Howard Roger Garis) concept as an allegory for child abuse. The song starts out with a minute of circus music (organ played by Bob Beeman) which is followed by a nervous child reading a bit of the game's introduction. The heavy metal song "Exoskeletons" contains a short riff of Black Sabbath's song "Supernaut" at the end. On the Metal Blade Records version of this album, there is a bonus track "The Tempter" (a Trouble cover lifted from Tourniquet's Intense Live Series, Vol. 2)
Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance was re-released and re-mastered in 2001 with new artwork and layout. The bonus tracks include live recordings of the title song and "Bearing Gruesome Cargo" played at Flevo Festival, Liempde, The Netherlands in 2000. It is the last album to feature vocalist Guy Ritter who left the band after the recording of the album. The album was also independently rereleased in 2001 with digital remastering, bonus tracks and new cover art (with "Dissonance" misspelled as "Dissonence" on the tray liner edges). Readers of HM Magazine voted Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance as "Favourite Album of the 1990s". Intense Records released the album to Christian market and Metal Blade Records released it to secular market.

One Minute Silence - Buy Now...Saved Later

One Minute Silence came together in the early 1990s as Irish vocalist Brian Barry got together with guitarist Chris Ignatiou under the name "Near Death Experience". After working with various rhythm sections, they settled with Gibraltarian Glen Diani on bass and Englishman Eddie Stratton on drums. Brian had befriended Eddie prior to the formation of the band. The band was soon forced to change its name because of an American group who shared it, and so they became One Minute Silence. That name, originally intended to be that of a song, was chosen to parody the practice of having a one minute silence as a mark of respect when someone considered "important or well respected" dies. The band felt that that respect was often "misplaced". The band signed a record deal with Big Cat Records in 1997, and released Available In All Colours the following year. Buy Now... Saved Later followed in 2000 after an amicable split with Ignatiou, who was replaced by Italian Massimo Fiocco, known as Massy. This, their second album, represented a noticeable step in the band's musical progression: the record's production quality and style differed from that of their debut, for which they had used a hip-hop producer. Buy Now... sounded more like a metal album. With its well-rounded production and matured song-writing, Buy Now... sent the band on a tour of the US, with notable acts such as Slipknot and Mudvayne, the latter of which toured with them around the UK as supporting act.
After circulating a three-track demo and signing a deal with Taste Media, the band started recording sessions for their third album in the autumn of 2002. From live performances and both live and studio recordings, the new material was obviously a further progression; the group was experimenting with various time signatures, such as 7/4, and was using more melody and a greater variation in song structure. A single, "We Bounce", was released on March 31, 2003, with a third album, titled One Lie Fits All, following on July 7, 2003. According to their now-defunct website "[t]his name continues the pattern of manipulating well known marketing slogans in order to present a political statement."
One Lie Fits All showed a new direction for band. Yap's rapping gave way to much more singing on tracks like "Price Of The King's Ticket". There are still the thunderous live songs like "We Bounce" and "I Wear My Skin".
Between these releases, One Minute Silence had toured extensively, though the latest tour had to be cancelled. The group's following came largely from their energetic live shows — they have been voted "Best British Live Act" in Kerrang! magazine.

The Haunted - Haunted

The Haunted is a Swedish heavy metal band, formed in 1996 in Gothenburg. The original members were Patrik Jensen (also member of Witchery) on guitar, Jonas Björler (bass), Adrian Erlandsson (drums), Anders Björler (guitar), and Peter Dolving (vocals). Both of the Björler brothers and Erlandsson were members of seminal melodic death metal band At the Gates, a pioneering force in the Swedish death metal scene. All members (past and present) are from Gothenburg, Sweden, with the exception of Patrik Jensen, who is from Linköping, Sweden, and Per Möller Jensen, who is from Denmark.

Scatterbrain - Scamboogery

Scatterbrain was a band that defied labeling. Rock? Hardcore? Metal? Thrash? Rap? Yeah, all that and more. Scatterbrain wrote, recorded, and toured from 1989 - 1994. For many, they were known for their minor hit, "Dont Call Me Dude," which received regular rotation on MTV's "Headbangers Ball," and was a top-ten pop single in Australia. For others though, these guys were about much more than one song or video. Real Scatterbrain fans knew the band as tight, talented, diverse, funny, heavy, clever, and kick-ass.
The band was formed in 1989 from the leftover pieces of the classic NYHC band Ludichrist. Ludichrist was known for its excellent musicianship and eclectic sound, and these elements were carried over to Scatterbrain. Without the hardcore label of Ludichrist, Scatterbrain was free to take the music anywhere they wanted, and take it they did. How many bands cover Cheech and Chong, and Mozart on the same album? Scatterbrain did. Their debut album, Here Comes Trouble, showed the bands hardcore/trash roots, but added a whole lot more. Jazz, classical, rap, hard rock, blues, funk, classic rock, doo-wop, avant-garde, punk, and more, could all be heard rambling through this record, as well as their subsequent releases, Scamboogery and Mundis Intellectualis. The band also had a reputation for great live shows. They were tight, heavy, and highly entertaining. Debauchery, costumes and cover songs were nightly occurrences as Scatterbrain littered the stages and cities of the world with their presence. Besides ripping through their original material, on any given night one might see a medley of Mozart or Motorhead, a cross-dressing, dildo-slinging version of Motley Crues "Girls, Girls, Girls," a giant chicken singing Lynyrd Skynyrd or The Allman Brothers, and the band channeling the devil himself for Frank Zappa's "Titties and Beer." And now they're back, but just for a minute. See 'em while you can - you may never get another chance...

Speedealer - Here Comes Death

These guys are the best in the buisness. Nobody grabs you by your ears and kicks you in the face with a cowboy boot like speedealer. This album is one you put in and leave in from start to finish. You can't get any better at straight forward, hard hittin, no foolin around rock and roll than Speedealer. Do youself a favor.

Girlschool - Believe

It’s amazing to think that Girlschool started life as a band called Painted Lady way back in 1977, and extraordinary that these sister sledgehammers released their debut album, ‘Demolition’, nearly 25 years ago. And it’s remarkable to discover that Girlschool are apparently listed in The Guinness Book Of Records for being the world’s longest-surviving all-female rock band (although Girlschool guitarist Kim McAuliffe, for one, won’t believe it until she receives the gilt-edged framed certificate).
‘Believe’ is the kind of record you thought no one ever made any more. It’s Girlschool in prime-time, tousled‘n’rat-tailed, aggressive‘n’hook-laden, full-on shoutalong form, and it’s augmented by some ferocious, stiletto-in-the-groin attitudes.
No change there, then, you might say. But ‘Believe’ sounds like a breath of fresh air...albeit with more than a hint of smudged, misapplied lipstick lingering in the wing.
The members of Girlschool may all be in their 40s now, but they’re still trailblazers - even if they’ll never quite live down that burdensome ‘female Motorhead’ sobriquet. Original bassist Enid Williams returned in 2000 (after an absence of 18 years, would you believe), and together with drummer Denise ‘frenzied foxbat’ Dufort the duo are truly one of femme rock’s grittiest, grimiest rhythm sections (even if they’re not exactly bosom buddies). Long-time Girlschool fans may bemoan the continued absence of guitarist Kelly Johnson, but Leeds-born hellcat Jackie Chambers (who also joined in 2000) is a first-rate replacement. Jackie is acutely aware of Girlschool’s howlin’ harridan heritage. She also has a major songwriting credit on each of this album’s 15 tracks. ‘Believe’ mixes straight-to-the-heart, raucous, rasping, typically chunky 70s-style British rock with a bunch of bold songs that push the Girlschool boundaries forward somewhat.
You’ve got to love a band that puts a song called ‘We All Love (To Rock‘N’Roll)’ on an album in 2004. On that track the four-piece don’t disappoint, creating a jaunty, punk-tinged shriek from the past with their archetypal call-and-response vocals and lyrics that go:‘Waking up the neighbors/Waking up the dogs/Walking down the streets/Singing Motorhead songs’. ‘Let’s Get Hard’, with its rampant, Aerosmith-esque rollin’ riff, plus the shrill simplicity of ‘C’mon’ and ‘Feel Good’ are further eye-watering examples of top-spanking ‘School seduction.
But delve a little deeper into the album and you’ll find some surprising maturity, often accompanied by a fiercely feminist undercurrent. ‘Come On Up’ neatly turns male voyeurism on its head; the passionate anti-war cry of ‘Crazy’ contains pinging ‘All The Young Dudes’-type guitar tones and, surprisingly, builds into something of a Euro-metal anthem; the nails-raking-down-the-back-female-empowerment schtick of ‘Yes Means Yes’ had me reaching for a etaphorical tube of Savlon. It’s a much overused phrase these days, but there’s no doubt that Girlschool deserve to be called a national treasure. Even if their jewellery will always come from Argos.

Symphorce - PhorcefulAhead

Besides the usual doom and gothic stuff chief Horst normally loves to send me this month he really suprised me with the 3rd album of German power metallers Symphorce, their first album released by Metalblade. As nearly always when I receive some new promo's I had never heard of this band before. But when the disc made it's first turns in my CD player I immediately regretted the fact that I had never heard of this band before. My goodness.. I think my colleauge Ferdi would regret it that he didn't get this one when he finds out about this band..
Powermetal it is but a very melancholic breed of it thanks to the tasteful keyboard lines although I didn't find the name of a keyboard player in neither the booklet nor on the CD cover. After checking some sound samples from the first 2 albums on the band's website I come to the conclusion that the band has stepped off the gas and got more melodic as time went by. Guitarist Cedric Dupont is also active in Freedom Call and a link to this band can be found in the double and triple vocal parts on this album. Also comparissons to bands such as Nevermore and Evergrey pop to my mind. Vocalist Andy B. Franck has a both powerful and very sensetive voice with, like many of his counterparts is zowel krachtig als bijzonder gevoelig met als enige minpunt dat hij net als veel van zijn landgenoten, a still quite audible German accent. I have no idea how to describe the music differently but I think fans of both powermetal as well as more melodic or symphonic styles would really like this album. PhorcefulAhead doesn't bore me for one single moment, not even when I played it about 10 times in a row. So on November 18th head full force ahead to your record store to get your own copy which will contain 3 extra demo tracks besides the 10 songs present on my promo copy. And when you're there also check if you can get the first 2 albums ("Truth To Promises" en "Sinctuary") as well. Now that the band has signed to MetalBlade I think it wil be just a matter of time before we mention Symphorce together with the other German heroes such as Gamma Ray, Iron Savior, Blind Guardian and Freedom Call. PhorcefulAhead will definately be in my top 10 of 2002 this month they really earned there spot at the Deadly Steel section. Maybe a good idea to get to know the band a little better in an upcoming issue by having a chat with them....

Society 1 - Exit Through Fear

This is a very, very, good sounding band. If you have'nt had the pleasure of hearing them, do so. They have a real, real, crisp sound, and not over produced. If you like double drive, or korn, or stone sour, then you will like this one as well. so listen to the samples, it will give an idea of this cd sorta. I bought this the day it came out and I am not sorry that I did. Matt Zane and his crew, Society 1, bring you into realms of bliss with Society 1's sophmore release, Exit Through Fear. It is a wonderful album, from a wonderful group of guys. If you like this album, you are going to love the new one, The Sound Which Ends Creation, which is going to be basically the next level up from Exit Through Fear! This cd is just grand- if you havent heard S1 yet you are missing out. From the opening single ,"Nothing", to the closing track the listener is entertained. Matt Zane's vocals are great- and this is not just another cd where all the tracks sound the same- each is unique and I always have them stuck in my head. I am constantly listening to ETF. One warning- if you buy this cd it will never come out of your cd player!

Puny Human - It's Not The Heat, It's The Humanity

Puny Human's strength has always been in its focused riffs and precision attack. Without ever sounding stiff or mechanical, the band has honed its chunky four-piece sound to a razor's edge with It's Not the Heat, It's the Humanity. But what truly steals the show is guitarist Jason Diamond's brittle, yet full fuzz tone, which sounds as good throwing out both tight, sculpted riffs and full power chords. Channeling the riff-rock of AC/DC and Black Sabbath -- not to mention mixing in greasy 1970s biker-movie imagery -- the group may seem retro to some, but there is no denying their skill or power. And thankfully, clichéd metal and alternative rock production techniques are dismissed for a no-frills sonic stamp that matches the band's template. "The Ox," a tribute to John Entwistle, is as scathing as it is sincere. The noted Howard Johnson is credited with playing baritone sax on several tracks, but his presence is inaudible if it even made the final mix.

Passenger - Passenger

If you're a fan of In Flames, Soilwork or any of the excellence in metal that comes from Sweden, you're probably already aware of the new supergroup known as Passenger. If not, you can definitely expect a pleasant surprise. Featuring none other than Anders Friden of In Flames notoriety on vocals, and Gardenian guitarist Niclas Engelin pounding out the riffs with true metallic glory, Passenger is the newest force to be reckoned with in today's metal scene. Channeling a sound that's an old school Nevermore/In Flames hybrid, Passenger take the new school back in time for a true, uh, old school treatment.
Opening track "In Reverse" gets things rolling at the pace of a crazed rhinoceros, boasting an opening drumbeat that is headbanging worthy. "In My Head" continues the heaviness, but with a slower tempo and Nevermore-like riff. The atmospheric verses recall a slower version of Soilwork's
"Departure Plan," while "For You" follows, showing the lighter side of the band. Friden sounds truly stellar on this song especially, as it is quite apparent that he's beefed up his lungs in preparation for the upcoming In Flames release due this fall. Though every track has its own identity and refuses to flow into the next, other highlights would definitely include "I Die Slowly," with its cathartic chorus and monster riffage, courtesy of Engelin. "Rain" thunders with the intensity of something you'd find on In Flames' "Colony," while "Circles" brings to light a new side and sound of anything either Friden or Engelin has ever done. If you're a fan of the new wave of Swedish death metal, you're going to undoubtedly enjoy this disc with the great combination of heavy riffs, rhythms and melodies. The album has the same atmosphere all along the album, but it's not boring at all.

Abydos - Abydos

Andy Kuntz proves here that is among the best composers in prog metal scene. Just awesome work, theatrical music in many places but remain in metal category. Simply one of the best albums i heared in years. Maybe the name Abydos doesn’t tell you a lot, but knowing this is the solo project from Andy Kuntz, lead singer of the German progmetal band Vanden Plas, should raise the expectations. Abydos - it refers to an Egyptian tomb site in the Valley of the Kings, where Osiris, God of ethernal reincarnation, was worshipped. Quite diffrent from his mother band Vanden Plas here are the best ideas Kuntz gathered. Very symhonyc sometimes, but also very heavy in places, just the right combination to become a masterpice of prog metal these years. Absolute every tune is from great to the best, so i give 5 stars without hesitation. The best tracks are:You broke the sun, just super,Silence (reminds of DT or Shadow Gallery, but not a copy) and the last tune and the longest A boy named fly. So in conclusion this isn’t another project from a frustrated musician, but a genuine masterpiece from a man who has used all his experience to make something unique, bravo Mr.Kuntz.

Fair Warning - 4

Founded out of the ashes of Zeno and V2, Fair Warning achieved a remarkable amount of success with their self titled debut album, especially in Japan where sales went absolutely ballistic. "The response we got from Japan was nothing short of phenomenal," Ule recalls. "To be honest, we'd expected a bit of a positive reaction in Europe at least because the reviews were so good, although in the end, the record didn't do as well as we'd hoped it would. We weren't all that impressed with how WEA handled it, although the Japanese response did make up a little bit for some of their promotional shortcomings in Europe." Given the general negativity towards traditional melodic rock back in the early 90's, that they got a deal at all was a feat in itself, let alone the fact that it was with a major label like WEA. "I think we demo'd about five or six tracks," Ule offers , "and that generated a really positive vibe around the band. In fact, I think we had about five major labels who wanted to sign us, but we went with WEA because we knew the guy in charge and we were very impressed by their commitment, which to be fair, in the beginning their intentions were very good. The problem was, although it was a worldwide deal, it was with the German WEA, and in the worldwide Warner concern, they don't really have that much say. So although they tried, they couldn't really do it for us in other countries, which is the main reason why in the end we decided to leave."
After the heady success of the Rafe McKenna (Giant, Ten, etc) produced debut, the band opted to produce follow up 'Rainmaker' themselves. "It wasn't that we weren't happy with Rafe," Ule explains, "working with him was a lot of fun, but when we'd finished the debut, the record company came back and asked us to remix four or five of the tracks on it because they preferred the sound of the original demo's. So we did, which they were very pleased with, and ever since then it's just seemed like the logical thing for us to produce ourselves. It just feels right for us really to do it that way." ... we were supposed to support Whitesnake on their European tour as well, but that had to be pulled because of Helge' accident. He broke his arm in two places which put him out of action for about five months ...

Savatage - Gutter Ballet

This album was a true turning point for the band, for after Jon Oliva watched The Phantom of the Opera in Toronto, he decided to change the sound of the band, from a heavy metal to a more progressive sound, which is reflected in songs such as "When the Crowds are Gone" and "Gutter Ballet". The final three songs ("Mentally Yours", "Summer's Rain", "Thorazine Shuffle") are a conceptual suite dealing with a single character as revealed by the band in interviews.
The original title for the record was Temptation Revelation, but this was changed to Hounds of Zaroff which was a Steve Wacholz suggestion. As late as May 1989, the band was having doubts surrounding the title. At the time, the eventual title track of the album had not been written. The title, "Gutter Ballet" was in fact the title of a play Paul O'Neill had written ten years earlier that would later make-up the majority of the band's next work, "Streets". In fact, "Gutter Ballet" was written with just Jon, Criss and Paul in the studio. Jon's drumming skill was competent enough to perform on the track and Jon also provided the bass guitar duties for the track.

V.A. - Spacewalk - A Salute to Ace Frehley

The best of today's crop of metal guitarists got together for a tribute to perhaps one of rock's most influential figures in Ace Frehley. The best songs on the album include "Deuce" by Megadeth's Marty Friedman, "Shock Me" by Gilby Clarke, "Parasite" by Tracii Gunns, and a very "Beck-ish" (of Odelay, not Jeff) rendition of "New York Groove" by Bruce Bouillet. In fact, all the songs were quite good with the exception of John Norum's "Cold Gin" which had too much lead guitar work. It seemed like he was trying too hard to show off in a song that is simple to the core. Overall, it is a must have for anyone influenced by the style and personna of Ace Frehley.
