THE RODS: (1981) The Rods (High Vaultage)

The Rods carved a nice little career for themselves in the early 80's, basically coming across as an American version of Motorhead in spirit, a loud power trio cranking out blue-collar, anthemic hard rock tunes. By 1986 they had expanded to a four-piece on Heavier Than Thou and soon closed their career with the Hollywood album, which was intended to be an entirely different project but ended up released under the Rods name. Apart from their music, they are notable since founder David Feinstein is the cousin of none other than Ronnie James Dio, and they performed together in Elf in the early 70's. Drummer Carl Canedy later became a respected record producer, and still performs as a session drummer. Feinstein left the music business in the mid-nineties but suddenly returned to the music scene in 2003, forming a new band simply called Feinstein. http://www.bnrmetal.com/groups/rods.htm

EXCITER: (1983) Heavy Metal Maniac

I felt compelled to write a review of this when I saw just one person had done so (thanks for getting things started man). This music absolutely rates more than one review. If you are a fan of 80's Metal this is for you. You WILL like this music. The vocs are clean - powerful singing; just the drummer doing a very good job of belting it out. The drumming also is powerful as is the guitar and bass playing. They do not sound like they are trying to copy anyone. Exciter alternates between medium tempo metal to speed. They never go as fast as possible or as slow as possible (whatever that means). Also, they don't try too hard to impress only to come up short - they pound their music out with conviction. I was a fan when they were putting their albums out and was surprised that they got "left behind." It just occurred to me - if you are a fan of Raven or Saxon you WILL like Exciter - Raven and Saxon also seem to have been "left behind." Sadly, the music biz only had room for so many bands - Mettallica, Megadeth, Slayer, all bands that I love - but other bands tried and tried but just could not get noticed. Exciter is not power metal or wannabee metal. It is heavy metal that you simply will enjoy listening to - you may occasionally grit your teeth, jump up and down, and forget what it was you were just doing . . . and say to yourself "this is some damn good metal!" I don't give it 5 stars because it's not a classic. But it is very, very good metal.... Mark Bertram Farmer

EXCITER: Violence & Force

EXCITER-"Violence And Force" LP(1984) is one of the true early thrash metal classics of the 80's. It is an essential addition to any true metalhead's collection. Unfortunately, this CD is NOT the definitive version of this Canadian masterpiece. The fifth track on the original LP "Evil Sinner" is MISSING from this CD version. It wouldn't be such a big deal if we were dealing with a weak song, but "Evil Sinner" is my FAVORITE track on the whole album and it is inexcusable that it was left off. "Evil Sinner" features one of the most over-the-top vocal performances in metal history. Truly screaming SO high that even Rob Halford and the boys from Judas Priest would run for cover. So just wait until a complete CD version of "Violence and Force" is released, or better yet, pick up an original on vinyl or cassette. DO NOT MISS OUT ON THE SCREAMING WRATH OF THE EVIL SINNER!!! Long live Dan Beehler!!! Rivaled only by Larry Portelli of BLESSED DEATH for sheer screaming OTT thrash vocal mayhem!!!... by Tyler Kasuboski

EXCITER: (1985) Long Live the Loud

Ah, this record brings back some of the most vivid memories of my 37 years on this planet. Where to begin? Summer, 1985. My dad had cancer and was in the hospital in St. Louis. I was a hundred-and-fifty miles south in our little hometown of Poplar Bluff. I would drive once every week to St. Louis to visit. I bought this on my very first trip to see him.
This was highly, highly anticipated by me and my cohorts that summer. Metallica's, "Ride the Lightning" was almost a year old and Slayer's, "Hell Awaits" had just been released, as had the debut by Exodus. What on earth would LP number three from Ottawa's finest bring? Word was that they were wimping out... After hearing a track on Music For Nations, "Metal Zone" comp, I was pretty sure that wasn't the case.Although not the groudbreaking landmark that my friends and I had hoped for, "Long Live the Loud" is quite pleasing. Maybe I was a bit let down...I had built this thing up to immortal proportions in my little head. Essentially, the same style as the first two. A bunch of proto-power-thrash with loads of double-bass drumming and banshee wails from Dan Beehler, atonal screeeeeeeching, ala Greg Ginn, from Jon Ricci, as well as bulldozer bass backlash from Alan Johnson. Side Two is a bit more proggy, (Heh, heh, heh, heh, heh...) with "Wake Up Screaming" moving through several tempos and stolen Sabbath ideas. "Born To Die" and "Victims of Sacrifice" plod and pound along at mid-tempo, barely escaping devolution into "boring," but manage to keep their heads above putrid water. All the rest thrash and flail along like Motorhead and Saxon trapped in a British Mk. II tank being pushed by an out-of-control steam locomotive that Lemmy can't get a handle on.
Guy Bidimead, who had recently manned the wheels of steel for the "new" songs on Motorhead's, "No Remorse" comp, lends his production skills here. The result is noisy and thinner than one would like, but still barely containing the thrashing rage these guys were capable of stiring up. In the end, Exciter never falls prey to their lack of skill, songwriting ability, botched production or horrifically cliche lyrics, simply because the performance is so over-the-top and contains SO MUCH energy. Laugh all you want, but you'll sift through 1,000 bands or more before you find another with the rawr, manic energy these guys had in their glory days!.... David Chris Dalton

EXCITER: (1987) Unveiling the Wicked

Awesome metal album of the 80's. Fast drumming, loud guitars and screaming vocals. This is what heavy metal is all about, but one question ? This CD is digitally remastered from what ? You can clearly hear in the background the original source which was taken from a record album. What happened to the original tapes ? Better than nothing I quess, once the music starts you can't hear the record sound and they did a good job of drowning it out at the end of each song. Still worth the money. I have a few cd's that were taken directly from a record album and remastered to cd. Anthrax "Fistful of Metal" was one....by M. Montoya (U.S.A.)

GRAVE DIGGER: (1994) Witch Hunter (Noise)

German power metal band Grave Digger was formed in late 1980 by frontman Chris Boltendahl, guitarist Peter Masson, bassist Willi Lackmann and drummer Albert Eckardt. Debuting three years later on the Rock from Hell compilation, in 1984 Grave Digger returned with the full-length Heavy Metal Breakdown; after the following year's Witch Hunter, Lackmann left the lineup, and was replaced by bassist C.F. Brank for 1986's War Games. The group then shortened their name to simply Digger for 1987's Stronger than Ever, which saw guitarist Uwe Lulis substituting for Masson; Boltendahl then dissolved the project, finally reuniting with Lulis in 1991 and recruiting new bassist Tomi Gottlich and drummer Jörg Michael for The Reaper, credited once again to Grave Digger. Drummer Frank Ullrich replaced Michael for 1995's Heart of Darkness, with percussion duties handled by Stefan Arnold on Tunes of War; with the departure of Gottlich, Jens Becker assumed the bass for 1998's Knights of the Cross. Keyboardist H.P. Katzenburg expanded the Grave Digger lineup to a five-piece for Excalibur, issued a year later...by Jason Ankeny

GRAVE DIGGER: (1989) Heavy Metal Breakdown (Noise)

With song titles as direct as "Headbanging Man," "Stormin' the Brain," and "Heart Attack," a band better deliver some pretty ferocious music. Luckily, Grave Digger doesn't disappoint. Hammering home one huge speed metal riff after another, Heavy Metal Breakdown starts off balls to the wall and just gets heavier. More importantly, though, Grave Digger has enough imagination, verve, and (despite the fact that they'd surely hate to admit it) pop smarts to keep the whole thing interesting. Though the cheesy album art and monk's cloaks might suggest a parody act, these guys have enough chops and energy to silence any naysayers. In a genre where groups are often judged purely on their adherence to a very narrow aesthetic blueprint and live in constant fear of being accused of selling out, Grave Digger isn't afraid to throw in some subtle harmonic variation and interesting arrangement ideas. Not that this music is radio-friendly or anything, but someone here knows how to construct a song and make it catchy, which, when it comes to music like this, is a rare quality indeed. Heavy Metal Breakdown sounds just like its title would suggest. In other words, it's a must-have for any fan of early speed metal and super-aggressive music in general....by Pemberton Roach, All Music Guide

TYGERS OF PAN TANG: (2004) Noises from The Cathouse (Communique)

Noises From The Cathouse, The latest release from the Tygers Of Pan Tang is a very good hard rock album. To me, a fan of the Tygers since the early eighties, it reminds me alot of the Wild Cat album. It is a harder album then some of their past albums, such as The Cage and The Wreck-Age. Godspeak and Highspeed Highway Superman are the two best songs. TYGERS OF PAN TANG: (1985) The Wreck Age (Music For Nations)

The fifth Tygers record didn't storm the charts or break any new ground. But, the obvious now stated, Wreck-Age is not a bad spin. After an auspicious opening salvo of fiery metal slabs, here the Tygers return from legal hassles with their tails between their legs, offering safe hair to clog airwaves and make videos with, with no guilty treasures like "Paris by Night" coiled in the grooves. Keyboards and electronic drums let the listener know it's the big '80s right off the bat in opener "Waiting." The Tygers' claws have been sharper, but Wreck-Age holds hooks all the same. Depending on your personal hair tolerance (which must be high since you're here), the title track and "Desert of No Love" may take you to the top. "Women in Cages" revives an extinct vein of '70s exploitation cinema. In fact, victimization seems to be a motif, further detailed through "Protection," "Innocent Eyes," and, natch, "Victim." By the last song, it's easy to forgive the jolly ol' Tygers of Pan Tang for this forgettable poodle platter from a time of rock's fading innocence.... by Doug Stone, All Music Guide

Hearing Jess Cox on vox is a real treat. Reminds me of the good ol' days. And yeah, hey can too sing! :) The recording's great. Guitars, bass & drums sound tight and loud. TYGERS OFPAN TANG: (1992) First Kill (Metal Nation)

Little could they have known at the time these demos were originally recorded, back in '79, they would be released in full album form not once, but twice! Tygers', short lived though they were, and their prime in particular, were at their best in their original and crude form, featuring Cox, Dick, Laws, and Weir, which saw them release the classic "Wildcat" album from 1980. Commemorating the 25th anniversary of their debut 7" single, "Don't Touch Me There,"First Kill is again made available 18 years after its inception, this time with four bonus cuts -- "Burning Up," "Don't Touch Me There," "Money," "Wild Catz" -- from the original MCA demo sessions, previously unreleased, and superbly reproduced. In fact 25 year old demo tunes probably never sounded this fresh! Featuring fourteen tracks overall, First Kill is primeval NWOBHM in all its faded glory, fashioning the sights and sounds of early Nugent, Leppard, Riot, and TSOL with tough guy anthems like "Slave To Freedom," "Don't Take Nothing" "Alright On The Night," along with the more suave and sophisticated anthems like "Angel," and "Small Town Flirt," done for the '86 original.
The Tygers' were as amped and energetic as any band going in their day. With the right blend of musicianship, attitude, name and style, they arrived at the right time when the likes of Maiden, Def Leppard, Saxon, and others were all getting their feet wet; unfortunately, unlike the aforementioned, but like so many others of the time, they couldn't outlast persistent personnel shifts and inclimate industry standards that by the mid-'80s, the Tygers were already a long done has-been. But big-selling standouts notwithstanding, they were few and far between, for those that could admit to having a prime, for even one album (though we'll acknowledge the one-two punch of the John Sykes-led "Spellbound" and "Crazy Nights" in the year that followed as worthy follow ups to the "Wild Cat" debut) the Tygers' left behind a pretty grand legacy in spite of nearly threatening their beloved and oft-referred cult status with last gasp pop gimmicks that had little to do with the original set up in the first place. Back to where it all began, First Kill offers fans a fresh cut of endearingly dated, throttle-squeezing heavy rock that's tightly wound, slightly worn, properly impoverished in both production and package, with a few pages of prime era eye candy thrown in...by Vinnie Apicella

The tygers sound very light on this compared to past releases. It's not bad,but it is an aquired taste. Most of the orignal band members are gone, which accounts for the change of sound. This cd has a AOR/hard rock sound. The guitar solos are placed and well thought out in the songs but don't expect too much. TYGERS OF PAN TANG: (1982) The Cage (MCA)

Despite an incredibly promising start two years earlier, the Tygers of Pan Tang were experiencing an irreversible career slide by 1982. Their third effort, Crazy Nights, had been rushed and then largely abandoned by their record company, and hot shot guitarist John Sykes had left them in a lurch when he split abruptly to join Thin Lizzy. His clearly less talented and more commercially-inclined replacement Fred Purser (along with their management and label) helped push the band even further away from their metallic roots, resulting in the severely disappointing The Cage. Absolutely nothing is salvageable from the album's terrible first half, which is loaded with unbearably cliched rockers, like "Rendezvous," "Letter From L.A.," and "Lonely at the Top," and is bogged down by superfluous synthesizer backdrops and embarrassingly cheesy gang vocal harmonies and choruses. Best known for his work with Rush, producer Peter Collins' over-wrought style adds a certain flair, but detracts just as much spontaneity from promising tracks like "Tides" and "Danger in Paradise." Classy first single "Paris By Air" succeeds despite its terribly pretentious lyrics, but the same can't be said for the cringe-inducing "The Actor," whose absurd dramatics manage to spoil its beautiful piano intro. The album's only outstanding track has to be a spirited version of the Leiber & Stoller standard "Love Potion Number 9," which features a solo recorded by Sykes (surprise) prior to his departure and almost makes it all worthwhile in a mere two minutes of utter perfection. Sadly, the Tygers would be dropped by their management soon after releasing this blunder, and break up a short time later. [The 1997 Edgy Records CD reissue offers four bonus tracks which often eclipse the rest of the album (most notably "What You Sayin'") -- serving as further proof of the cluelessness of all involved. Also on hand are countless rare band photos, as well as extensive biographical info and technical credits....by Ed Rivadavia, All Music Guide

TYGERS OF PAN TANG: (1981) Live at Nottingham Rock City (Spitfire)

Obviously, the concert document lost a lot of impact in the video age. But back in the '70s, a live record was a career requisite that could break the band and the bank. The Tygers of Pan Tang came at the tail end of that era, and Live at Nottingham Rock City preserves an early-'80s show when the cats were at their peak. Against doctor's orders, the sick unit (save six-string sizzler John Sykes, in perfect health and form) takes the stage and tears through several fresh tracks from Spellbound, the Tygers' sophomore smoker that most consider their apex. The Tygers' debut, Wild Cat, recorded with a different singer, remains an endearingly ragged rager pushing brawn over brains, but new vox kid Jon Deverill's more accomplished howling does the early tunes proud, and fellow newbie Sykes (already on his way to greener pastures) also adds polish but never at the expense of passion. Live at Nottingham Rock City fell out of print two minutes after release, but stands as a concise study of the classic live LP (sans excessive solos, luckily) and a shining document of a tempestuous talent at its prime.... by Whitney Z. TYGERS OF PAN TANG: (1980)Wild Cat (MCA)

Hailing from tiny Whitley Bay in the Northeast of England, the Tygers of Pan Tang (whose name originated from a Michael Moorcock novel called Stormbringer) were formed when aspiring singer Jess Cox met guitarist Robb Weir at the local pub in November 1978. Weir, along with bassist Rocky and drummer Brian Dick, had recently formed a band combining the lessons of early-'70s heavy metal legends such as Black Sabbath and Deep Purple with the do-it-yourself ethos of punk -- an emerging style eventually dubbed the new wave of British heavy metal. After much rehearsing and gigging in the surrounding area the foursome recorded a number of demos at Impulse Studios, whose owners Neat Records released their first single "Don't Touch Me There" in September 1979. Relentless touring across Britain would follow, supporting such childhood heroes as the Scorpions and Budgie, as well as NWOBHM peers like Iron Maiden and Saxon. They also signed a deal with MCA and entered London's Morgan Studios in June to record their proper debut, Wildcat, which went straight into the British charts at number 18 upon its released in July 1980. Looking to beef up their sound, the band added virtuoso guitarist John Sykes just in time for their biggest gig ever at that year's Reading Festival. Yet, despite this promising start, singer Cox decided to quit the group at year's end, citing the ever-popular "musical differences" and going on to form the short-lived Lionheart with recently ousted Iron Maiden guitarist Dennis Stratton. Ex-Persian Risk vocalist Jon Deverill was drafted to replace him and the revitalized Tygers of Pan Tang kicked off 1981 firing on all cylinders. Widely considered their best album, Spellbound hit the streets in April 1981, and was followed by another bout of touring which kept them nipping at the heels of NWOBHM powerhouses Iron Maiden, Saxon, and Def Leppard. Things began to unravel when MCA forced the band to write and record a follow-up in only three weeks, resulting in the uneven Crazy Nights, released in November 1981. European dates in support of Ian Gillan followed, but guitarist Sykes quit abruptly to join Thin Lizzy upon their return to England (eventually achieving even greater success with Whitesnake and Blue Murder). The band soldiered on with new six-stringer Fred Purser, whose more commercial leanings were heard on 1982's disappointing The Cage album. Everyone seemed to be giving up on the Tygers, including their management, which dropped the band just prior to a sold-out tour of Japan. After a brief attempt at self-management, the group decided to call it quits later that year, and a 1983 greatest-hits set seemed to close the book on the Tygers of Pan Tang. Surprisingly, Deverill and Dick would resurrect a glammed-up version of the band in 1985 with guitarists Steve Lamb and Neil Shepard, and bassist Dave Donaldson. They released two albums: 1985's The Wreck-Age and 1987's Burning in the Shade (featuring Shepard's replacement Steve Thompson on guitar), both of which went absolutely nowhere and prompted another, apparently final split. 1986 also saw the release of the original band's 1980 Impulse Studio demos by Neat Records, under the title First Kill. In 2001 the Tygers released Live at Wacken, which was mostly recorded at the independent European metal festival of the same name. Live at Nottingham Rock City followed the same year.... by Ed Rivadavia, AMG

PICTURE : (1982) Diamond Dreamer (Back Door)

After being rather successful in a local band, lead guitarist Jan Bechtum decides to put an add in a Dutch music magazine to find a new band. A few months later Rinus Vreugdenhil reads the add and calls Jan to join him and Laurens Bakker to form a new group. The first time they play together they know immediately that this is the band they've been looking for. They decide to name the group Picture. The name had been used before by the local group in which both Rinus and Laurens had played. The search for a good vocalist ends a few months later when Ronald van Prooijen agrees to join Picture. Two months later in August, Picture records a demo in the rehearsal room and the song 'My Gun Shoots' from this demo is aired on Dutch radio in the program of Alfred Lagarde. During a gig in December two Dutch radio people from Vara's Popkrant get excited over Picture and decide to put them on their show. RIOT : (1994) Night Breaker (Rising Sun)

A solid heavy metal album, Night Breaker was released originally in 1988 by Rising Sun; Metal Blade re-released it in 1999 and it holds up quite well, doing justice to the British heavy metal sound that was starting to splinter and deteriorate by the late '80s. Night Breaker sounds a little more polished than most Iron Maiden, and most Judas Priest as well (excepting the squeaky clean Turbo), so this may not appeal to British metal fans that enjoyed the more raw sound of the genre. There's also a heavy dose of Dokken on Night Breaker, especially on "Faded Hero." Riot does a respectable version of Deep Purple's "Burn" but make Procol Harum's "Whiter Shade of Pale" sound like a painful exercise in the land of bad metal. The obligatory ballad "In Your Eyes" jars the album's momentum momentarily, but there are enough highlights ("Silent Scream," "Outlaw," "Babylon") to make up for most of the schmaltz.... by Gina Boldman, AMG

RIOT : (1990) The Privilege of Power (Epic)

Like Queensrÿche's 1988 prog metal masterpiece Operation: Mindcrime, Riot's Privilege of Power works off of fear, paranoia, and conspiracy, employing ten complex tracks that work as a single unit. Where Mindcrime stuck to a straight narrative, working every Pink Floyd-ism it could into its disillusioned protagonist, Power takes a broader, less specific approach to its subject. The atmospheric snippets that tuck-point each song into place help maintain a general air of unease, eventually giving way to an ambiguous but entertaining revolution that lacks Queensrÿche's self-importance. Lyrically, the group does little to deviate from obvious metaphor and "Viking" simplicity -- in "metalspeak" something as mundane as an airplane ride ("Metal Soldiers") is described by shouting "We climb aboard the eagle made of steel" followed by a four-octave scream -- but "true blue" fans of heavy metal know the genre's scholarly limitations, and revel in its face-value descriptions of rebellion and honor. The bizarre use of a horn section (keyboards?) on tracks like "On Your Knees" and "Killer" actually works, adding a swaggering charm to the already hook-laden tunes. The ferocious "Dance of Death" brings to mind classic Judas Priest and features brutal guitar work by guitarist/songwriter Mark Reale -- he really is remarkable -- and elements of Iron Maiden run rampant throughout the rousing "Storming the Gates of Hell." The record loses its flow -- not its focus, as it never really has any -- with the dreadful "Little Miss Death" -- a study in "horned-hand" mediocrity -- and the obvious single "Maryanne," which -- although the vocals are outstanding and the slight melodic variation (mixed with car horns and other sonic oddities) is infectious -- is virtually a carbon copy of Boston's "More Than a Feeling."... by James Christopher Monger, AMG

RIOT : (1988) Thundersteel (Epic)

"I was born on these streets, years ago/I was the king of the neighborhood," sings vocalist Tony Moore during "Bloodstreets." Such a line probably revealed the sentiment of guitarist Mark Reale perfectly, and it also encapsulates the mood of Thundersteel. A comeback album after several years of inactivity, this 1988 album is an unheralded classic. The disc takes cues from everything that was metal at the time, combining classic European styles reminiscent of Judas Priest's heavier moments (a premonition for Painkiller), thrashing guitars and pounding percussion indicative of the then-burgeoning underground thrash movement (it's got more riffs than Anthrax ever had), and undertones of the hair metal that was riding the charts at the time (especially in appearance) into a cohesive moment of refined ferocity. Perhaps it was this diversity that doomed the record to commercial failure at the time of its release, or even the abundance of dexterous musical histrionics that at times overwhelm Thundersteel (it was well-received in Japan and other areas where techno-metal always had a sizable audience). Regardless, Thundersteel has everything that makes metal great in all its overstated glory, making the disc an unappreciated classic.... by Brian O'Neill, AMG

RIOT : (1979) Narita (Capitol)

New York's Riot is unfortunate representative of a "lost generation" of American hard rock bands. Formed in the late '70s, when widespread record industry recession conspired with disco's airwave domination and headline-grabbing (but little-album-selling) punk rock to drive even some of the decade's most successful heavyweight dinosaurs (Black Sabbath, Kiss, etc.) to the brink of extinction, Riot saw precious few of their contemporaries (most notably Van Halen) actually make it through to the big time. Not so lucky as the California quartet, Riot had to seek out a foreign label to take a chance on their stellar eponymous debut in 1977, and then financed a second, Narita, on their own dime before managing to lure a still rather hesitant Capitol Records to pick it up. Finally released in late 1979, Narita was named after the Japanese airport controversially built on sacred ground (hence its bizarre album cover) and contained slick but powerful hard rock -- nowhere near as combustible as VH's debut, but hardly squeaky-clean like Boston's, either. In fact, the record's more considered tracks, such as "Waiting for the Taking" and "Kick Down the Wall," were generally the ones that left something wanting, while most of its best songs -- "49er," "Hot for Love," "Road Racin'" -- stood upon a knife's edge between Guy Esperanza's chrome-plated, echo-enhanced vocals and Mark Reale's razor-sharp riffs and stinging leads. (The title track simply served up an instrumental tour de force for the latter.) Taken as a whole, all ten songs made for an entertaining but not exactly overpowering experience, and though the U.K. press' warm embrace would get Riot as far as playing the following year's inaugural Donington Monsters of Rock Festival, they would need another trip into the studio to concoct their definitive album, 1981's Fire Down Under. As for Narita, it sold just poorly enough upon release to eventually be deleted from Capitol's catalogs, yet just well enough to attain fond cult status among hard rock collectors, whose anticipation had grown to fever pitch by the time it was finally reissued by Rock Candy Records in 2005....by Eduardo Rivadavia, AMG

RIOT : 1993 - Rock City (Metal Blade)

It's hard to believe with the production on this disc how good the music is, but that just goes to show how good the band actually is at this point in their career. From looking at the list of tracks I can actually say I remember all of these songs even though I first heard them over 25 years ago! The weakest part of this disc is "Heart of Fire" and a few lyrics from "Overdrive". Then again I never sold a record, so, what do I have to gripe about.
Despite those few weaknesses this is an excellent release, particularly for a first album on such a small label (Firesign/Attic). I must admit, I bought it because Triumph was on Attic records at the time. It was worth every penny, too! Classics include "Desperation", "Warrior", "Tokyo Rose" and "This Is What I Get (For loving You)". Truthfully, every song here is worth listening to over and over. This is the first of three great releases in a row for Riot, but good luck finding "Narita", I'm still listening to my album!... by Michael Courtney (San Antonio. Texas)

RIOT : 1981 - Fire Down Under (Metal Blade)

This hard rocker from Riot has been undeservedly lost in the shuffle. The hot opening track, "Swords and Tequila", possesses irresistible drive and energy. Another prime cut is "Outlaw", with has a good alternating feel shifting from the verse to the chorus and back again. The lead guitar work isn't overwhelming, but that's not the point of the album; almost every track is under 5 minutes, varies in arrangement from one song to the next, and has a solid groove. No 8-minute guitar solos here. The lyrics are better than many others in this genre, as well, but quite tame; if you get off on profanity-laced lyrics you will be disappointed by this one. But the songs really rock, so who cares?.. DaveBassTaiko

ANVIL : (2004) Still Going Strong (Massacre)

After the last average releases from these metallers out of Canada, I was hesitant at getting their latest offering. While the majority of the album is classic and raw ''Anvil'' at it's best - not all of the songs can be considered memorable... The last two are the weakest tracks, but the other songs featured make up for it. You'll be sure to have lots of fun listening to these cool tracks! ANVIL : (2002) Absolutely No Alternative (Import)

In the early '80s, the Canadian heavy metal band Anvil made an impact on the developing speed metal scene. Their first three albums featured some mind-boggling technically advanced metal at a previously unheard-of speed -- sound for the sake of sound, not songs. After releasing their third album in 1983, the band sank into a mire of legal and creative problems where their accomplishments and popularity were eclipsed by the bands that defined speed and thrash metal -- Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth -- among other lesser-knowns who were all in debt to Anvil's previous work. ANVIL : (1983) Forged in Fire (Attic Records)

No question, this *is* Anvil's best (among many solid metal albums). There *might* be a couple less than stellar cuts on this album, but pound for pound this is, at least in my eyes, one of the top ten 80s metal albums. Yes, it rates as high as Priest, Sabbath and Maiden in their respective 80s primes.
It's hard, fast, loud, and in your friggin' face. And to this day (2003) it still makes me not only smile to hear it but it takes me back to heady days of the early 80s when damn near every metal release broke my neck.
Make this your first foray into Anvil metal and I don't think you'll be disappointed. If you like it try 'Metal On Metal' as your second. - - E. Gaumann (NAPLES, FL USA) - -

ANVIL : (1982) Metal on Metal (Attic Records)

Their first album was kinda like Rush's first album: it left ya wondering. Their second was a big step forward as Anvil's second album contained an alltime, *alltime*, classic metal tune ('Metal On Metal' (just like Rush's 'By-Tor')). Anvil hit their highwater mark with their 3rd album, and Rush with their 4th but this particular Anvil album shows just how in-tune Anvil was the metal scene back in the day. Bear in mind 'Kill Em All' was released a year *after* this album. 'Metal On Metal' was, in 1982, one of the hardest and heaviest metal albums ever, period. Today it sounds quite a bit dated, as does 'Kill Em All', but trust me.....back in the day this band friggin' *rocked*! Hard!
One other thing of note: many bands of note originating from the early 80s have some sort of Venomish "black"metal past. Anvil never really jumped on that Mercyful Fate/Venom bandwagon. Apart from one song ("666") they seemed to decide their own way was the only way to go. Hats off to them for being that original.
